Lura Jeanne Shelor was born to Fred and Elma (Barber) Woodhead in Edgar, Nebraska, on August 11, 1931. Jeanne was the fourth of five siblings. Most of her early years were spent in and around Bassett, Nebraska. After graduating from Rock County High School in 1949, Jeanne taught in a one-room country school for a year before moving to Omaha, Nebraska, in 1951 to work. She met Fred Shelor at the Music Box and knew immediately he was the one for her. On January 16, 1955, they were married at First Baptist Church of Omaha just a few short months after they met and celebrated their 67th anniversary in 2022. Jeanne and Fred had two children - Jeri and Theresa, two grandchildren – Jennifer and Joey, and three great-grandchildren – Oliver, Elliot, and Landon. Jeanne and Fred loved and enjoyed their family. Jeanne worked in the library at Pawnee Elementary School while the girls were in school so she could be home when they got out of school. She later worked at Mutual of Omaha until she retired.
After they were married, Jeanne and Fred became members of First Baptist Church of Omaha. Their strong faith was reflected by the way they lived their lives, prayed, read their Bible, raised their children, attended church regularly, served as Youth Leaders, attended Sunday School, and helped in the nursery and other areas. Jeanne served as the Secretary and Treasurer of the Homebuilder’s Class, Financial Secretary and Treasurer of the church for many years, and on various committees. She helped with numerous outreach events and served many snow cones at the carnivals.
Jeanne and Fred enjoyed traveling around the world but their favorite place to visit was Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to spend time with their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed cooking (she knew everyone’s favorite food), celebrating Christmas, family vacations and camping trips, having fun and laughing, dancing with Fred (especially to “In the Mood”), gardening, playing cards, bowling, being a Scout leader for the girls, and cheering on her favorite sports teams.
Hospitality was one of Jeanne’s spiritual gifts and she often invited people over to their home. Jeanne had a very loving and compassionate heart and was always willing to help others and often sent cards and provided meals for people. Jeanne and Fred invited his parents to move from Quincy, Illinois, to Omaha so they could care for them. As Fred’s health declined in later years, Jeanne showed her love by caring for him in their own home until God called her up to Heaven and she will be waiting to welcome Fred with open arms when God calls him home. Jeanne lived life to its fullest and always kept her eye on the goal – a seat at the table of the most high God and we know Jesus welcomed her into Heaven with outstretched arms. Jeanne – Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, Sister, Relative, and Friend, we love you and miss you dearly but we will be together again in Heaven!
Survived by loving husband of 67 years, Fred; daughters, Jeri Shelor, and Theresa Nielson (Bob); grandchildren, Jennifer Harrison (Jay), and Joey Nielson (Kelsey); and great-grandsons, Oliver and Elliot Nielson, and Landon Harrison.
