Of Omaha. Loving wife, mother, grandmother, school teacher, volunteer and friend. Preceded in death by husband Curtis Olson; and parents, Henry and Elizabeth West. Born in Lushton, NE, Doris attended school in Fairmont, NE, graduating from high school and then teaching in a one- room schoolhouse at the tender age of 16. She attended Peru State College where she met her future husband and love of her life, Curtis. They married and resided in Ong, NE and St. Paul, NE, where Doris taught in the public schools as she continued to take college courses in the summer. Doris and Curt eventually settled in Omaha in 1964, living in the Westbrook area while providing a loving home to their three children, later moving to Riverside Lakes in Waterloo. Doris taught in the Omaha Public Schools at Sunny Slope Elementary and Columbian Elementary while completing her college course work, eventually acquiring a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Dana College. Doris attended First United Methodist Church of Omaha, where she helped with weddings, visited shut-ins, and went on mission trips. She also volunteered with the League of Women Voters, as well as the Assistance League, working tirelessly for their many activities, including Operation Eyeglasses, Operation School Bell, Santa Monica House, and Thrift Shop. In her spare time, Doris enjoyed spending quality time with her seven grandchildren, planning arts and crafts and special activities for them. She also enjoyed playing bridge and traveling; visiting Canada, Mexico, Scandinavia, numerous countries in Europe, and China. She will long be remembered by her family and friends for her strength, energy, caring nature and easy laugh. Doris is survived by her son, Michael C. Olson, Valley, NE, daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer Ann and Robert Mullen, Jupiter, FL, and son and daughter-in-law, Scott Alan and Leah Olson, Edina, MN, grandchildren, Joselyn and Kimberly Mullen, Marty and Erin Olson, Adam, Grant and Ryan Olson; sisters, Lucile Heusinkvelt, Jan Fish (Tom), and brothers Don West (Judy), and Ken West (Valerie). VISITATION: Sunday, October 8th, 5-7 pm at Westlawn-Hillcrest Funeral Home. MEMORIAL SERVICE: Monday, October 9th at 10:00 am at First United Methodist Church, 7020 Cass Street, Omaha, NE. Interment Westlawn-Hillcrest Funeral Home.
