Donald D. Thompson, age 79, passed away peacefully in his sleep on September 16, 2023. Born on June 25, 1944, to his parents Garland and Doris Thompson in Garner, lowa; he was one of 4 children. Siblings include Carolyn Purchase, Harriet Busse, and David Thompson.
Don graduated from the University of Nebraska at Omaha in 1967 and earned a Master of Business Administration in 1975 from Golden Gate University. Proudly serving his country in the US Air Force as a pilot for 10 years, he reached the rank of Captain. He started Thompson & Thompson Enterprises with his dad in 1977, which grew to become D. Thompson Realty & Property Management. After working in property management for 41 years, he retired in 2018.
Don loved Jesus Christ deeply, and modeled Christ likeness to his family and others. He enjoyed serving the Lord as deacon and treasurer of Park Lane Baptist Church for more than 40 years and serving as treasurer of Whispering Cedars Baptist Camp for 16 years. Other passions included helping people, Nebraska Cornhusker football, golf, fishing, and pickle ball.
Family meant a great deal to Don. Married for 58 years, he is survived by his wife, Alene; his two children, Ken Thompson (wife Kim) and Dana Preston (husband Dave); six grandchildren, Kristen and Calen Philbrook, Kathryn Thompson, Karalyn Thompson, Nina Preston, Kristopher and Natalie Thompson, and Seth Preston; and three great grandchildren, Lily, Elijah, and Ezra.
Don is preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Harriet Busse.
He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
A visitation for Donald will be held Friday, September 29, 2023 from 12:30 PM to 1:00 PM at Westlawn-Hillcrest Funeral Home, 5701 Center St, Omaha, Nebraska 68106. A celebration of life will occur Friday, September 29, 2023 at 1:00 PM, 5701 Center St, Omaha, Nebraska 68106. A graveside service will occur Friday, September 29, 2023 at Westlawn-Hillcrest Memorial Park, 5701 Center St, Omaha, Nebraska 68106.
