Norma went to join her Lord and Savior on December 14, 2021.
Norma was born in Memphis, TN and raised by her parents Stuart G. and Edith Mitchell Carkeet.
She married Jim Ed Young in 1952. Together they raised three children.
Norma served as President of the Rainshaven Elementary School P.T.A. 1969 -1970 where all three of her children attended school. At the request of the Principle, Norma founded the P.T.A at the new Lanier Jr. High School and served as its first President 1970-1971 when both schools were a part of the Shelby County School System.
In 1970 Norma was appointed P.T.A. coordinator by Sheriff William N. Morris of his P.A.I.N. program which began in Shelby County.
She was active in the United Methodist Women at Longstreet United Methodist Church where she was a long time member.
Norma was active in civic concerns and served as President of the Republican Women in the Desoto County area in 2007.
Norma had a talent for writing poetry. She was a life member of the Poetry Society of Tennessee and won several awards for her poetry. She was elected the Poet Laureate for the Poetry Society of Tennessee in 1994.
She was Manager of several retail stores at Southland Mall and retired from Goldsmiths as the Credit Manager.
Norma loved God and shared his love teaching Sunday school, participating in VBS and especially with prayers for her family and friends. Her greatest joy was found in her family.
Norma was preceded in death by her parents, Stuart G. and Edith Carkeet, her biological father, William F. Wise, brothers and sisters in law, Eugene Carkeet, Sr.( Margaret), William F. Carkeet (Connie), a sister and brother in law, Dorothy Carkeet Brooks (William), and a son-in-law, Craig Tate.
Those left to cherish her memory are her husband of 69 years, Jim Ed Young, her children, Greg Young and his girlfriend (Nancy Cooper), Steve Young (Renee), LeAnne Young Tate May (Mark). Three grandchildren, Rachel Young Walton (J.R.), Brian Young, Mitchell Young, two great grandsons, Payton Young and Skylar Walton, two great granddaughters, Alexandria and Gabriella Young, and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. All of whom she loved very much.
Funeral services will be held Saturday December 18 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Brantley Funeral Home, 6875 Cockrum Road, Olive Branch, Mississippi. The family will receive friends beginning at 1 p.m. The family request that all people in attendance please wear face coverings.
The family requests in lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to St. Jude Childrens Hospital or The Shriners Hospital for Children.
