James Leroy Powers, 82 years old, passed away peacefully at his home on May 8, 2023, at approximately 10:05 AM due to complications of COPD. He was born on November 2 of 1940 as 1 of 7 children, and resided in Poagville, MS where he graduated Independence High School. After graduation, he joined the U.S Army (143rd signal battalion) and served between the years 1958-1961 to which he was honorably discharged at the end of his service. He met and married his wife (Elizabeth Ann Powers- deceased in 2009) and they spent their last days in their home, of 30+ years, in Southaven, MS. James was an over- the-road truck driver until his retirement. He spent his days listening to classic country music, watching sports on TV, and reading his Bible. James was a member of the Greenbrook Baptist Church located in Southaven, MS.
James is preceded in death by his parents Esther Mae (Lewis} Powers and Joe Herbert Powers, his wife Elizabeth Ann (Wiseman) Powers, his siblings Helen Mae Neal, H.L. Powers, Clarence Powers, Kenneth Powers, Gary Powers, and his grandson Mac Grigsby.
James is survived by his 2 daughters; Teresa (Powers) Grigsby (James Grigsby), Melinda (Powers) Brasfield, his brother Billy Powers (Marilyn), and his grandchildren, Jayson Brasfield, Jessica Brasfield, and Hunter Grigsby.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday May 12, 2023 at Brantley Funeral Home, 6875 Cockrum Street, Olive Branch, Mississippi. The family will receive friends beginning at 12 noon. He will be buried alongside his wife and grandson at Memorial Park South Woods Cemetery.
