He was born in Bangor on February 3, 1932, the son of Philip Herbert and Mary Stella
(Thompson) Herbert.
Philip started school at the Herbert Gray School and graduated from Old Town High School in 1951, where he received the Key in Biology. He attended the University of Maine in the fall of 1951. He served in the Naval Reserve and enlisted in the U. S. Army in 1952 and served until 1956, as a Supply Sergeant. He attended Officer’s Training School and served in Augsburg, Germany.
Philip worked at the Owen-Illinois (Pie Plate Factory) for 20 years until it closed in 1980. Prior to that he worked at Penobscot Shoe Company as a merchandising assistant and at Grant’s Dairy. In 1980, he took the position of Supervisor of Maintenance with the City of Old Town Housing Authority until he retired in 1994.
Philip became a member of the Old Town Grange in February, 1971.
On October 24, 1997, He was elected as the Master (President) of the Maine State Grange and remained there until 2001 after serving two terms. Philip served the Maine State Grange as a Subordinate Deputy for 9 years, 1 year as Pomona Deputy and as Chief Deputy for 8 years at which time he was elected Master. He held many positions in the Subordinate Grange such as Master, Treasurer and others. He also held the office of Master and others at the Pomona Level of the Grange. He was a sixth degree and seventh degree member as well as a delegate to the National Grange in 1997 to 2000 and was a member of the Assembly of Demeter at the National Grange and remained and member right up until his death serving as treasurer.
In 1996, Philip bought a piece of land and built a house on the Penobscot River in Passadumkeag doing almost all the work himself. He enjoyed working outside, planting a garden and working in his Greenhouse. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping, tinkering and camping and spending time with his family.
After retiring from Old Town Housing and not wanting to be idle Phil went to work at LaBree’s Bakery as a mechanic. He retired from there after 15 years.
Philip is predeceased by his parents his wife Yvette and a young son, Philip Anthony and his loving beagle Mitzi.
Philip is survived by his daughter Jodie Ann (Herbert) Dowling of Alton, his son Paul Arthur Herbert of Las Vegas, NV and daughter Connie Marie (Herbert) Hawes of Hudson. Grandchildren Aimee, Andrew, Shelley, Mary, Ryan, Nicole, Patrick and eight great-grandchildren.
Burial will be held in the Family lot in Forest Hill Cemetery in the spring.
