Paul is survived by his wife, Elaine of Bass Harbor, their son,
Ashley of Williamstown, Massachusetts, granddaughter Emma of Williamstown, Massachusetts, step-daughter Laurie MacLeod of Old Town, step-daughter Heather MacLeod of Bangor, and step-son John MacLeod of Lewiston.
Paul was a well known educator in Maine, past president of the Maine Reading Association from 1976 to 1978. His career spanned many years, from teaching elementary school at Asa Adams School in Orono, to being a Reading Consultant at John R. Graham School in Veazie, Principal at Deer Isle/Stonington Elementary school, teacher at Pemetic Elementary School in Southwest Harbor, and teaching at the University of Maine College of Education for seven years following his retirement.
Paul was an Executive Board member of the MDI Restorative Justice Program, 2006 Fellow of the Mine Writers Project, and was the only Anglo-American Coordinator of the Wabanaki Writer’s Project.
Honoring Paul’s wishes, a graveside ceremony for friends and family will be held Saturday, September 29, at 11:00 AM, at Lawndale Cemetery in Old Town. A memorial service of remembrance will be held in Ellsworth at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Wabanaki Youth Center, Wabanaki Way, Indian Island, ME 04668.
