OLD TOWN - Donald H. McKay died April 16, 2010, at a Bangor hospital. He was born Dec. 25, 1920, in Howland, a son of Dr. Hugh G. McKay and Elizabeth (Jellison) McKay. He graduated from Old Town High School in 1938 and received his degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Maine in 1942. Returning from World War II as a first lieutenant with a Bronze Star, he worked at Great Works paper mill until his retirement in 1983. He served on the Old Town City Council for 13 years, was a member of Old Town United Methodist Church, and had been a Boy Scout leader. In his younger years, he was an avid hiker, mountain climber and canoeist. He enjoyed staying in touch with family and friends by e-mail, and loved sharing photos and memories. He married his childhood sweetheart, Lillian F. Cousins, Aug. 8, 1942. He is survived by his devoted wife of 67 years, Lillian; daughters, Bonny Freeman and husband, Jerry, of Clifton, and Dianne Bouford and husband, James D., of Augusta; son, Gary McKay and wife, Kimberly, of Phoenix; two brothers, Gordon B. McKay and wife, Roberta, of Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Dr. Douglas W. McKay and his wife, Elinor, of Milbridge; and a sister, Ruth Pierce of St. Paul, Minn. He dearly loved his grandchildren, Jody Mcdonnell and Jeffrey of Bangor, Kenneth Freeman and Kerstin of Pompano Beach, Fla., Michael Bouford and Charmaine of Oakland, Miranda McKay of Bradley, Meghan McKay of Longview, Wash., and Brandon McKay of Phoenix; three great-grandsons, Ian and Kellen McDonnell and Kaelan Freeman. He loved and will be missed by many sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and friends. Friends may call 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday at Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main St., Old Town, where a funeral service will be conducted 1 p.m. Tuesday.
