1938-2022
Lorrie Hartley, 84, of Old Town, ME, went home to be with the Lord she loved, on Feb. 25, 2022. Lorrie grew up in Hudson, ME, and after graduating from Old Town High School, attended the University of Maine where she began her studies in Elementary Education. It was at U-Maine where she met a sophomore Forestry-major named Russ Hartley. This relationship grew, and they both transferred to Barrington Bible College in Rhode Island where Russ pursued training for ministry, and Lorrie completed her education studies. After graduation in 1960 they were married, and thus began a partnership that flourished for the next 60 years.
After college, Lorrie taught third grade while Russ pursued his Seminary studies. As Russ moved into full-time ministry, Lorrie transitioned into a support role and teacher of various classes, Bible studies, and retreats that blessed the spiritual growth of many people of all ages. Russ and Lorrie served as Pastor and wife in churches in Buxton and Falmouth Maine. After 15 years in Massachusetts where Russ was a hospital chaplain, Lorrie and Russ returned to local church ministry, serving churches in Elmira, New York, and finally, at the First Baptist Church of Houlton, ME. Lorrie and Russ retired to the Portland, ME area, and continued to be active in the lives of their local church, the local hospital, and especially the lives of their 3 children and 5 grandchildren.
Lorrie was a gifted musician, playing the violin and piano in High School and College. She continued to play the piano and organ for the next 60+ years, and she led worship teams and choirs that blessed many and exalted her Lord. Lorrie also was an avid seamstress, taking on the challenge of sewing wedding dresses for both her daughters, and crafting many beautiful quilts that she delighted in giving away.
One of Lorrie’s greatest delights was studying the word of God, and sharing what she learned with others, especially women’s groups. Lorrie had a gift for communicating eternal truths with those seeking to grow, and many women were blessed through her warm and inviting style of communication.
Lorrie is survived by her younger brother Gene, and by her 3 children and spouses (and 5 grandchildren): Shirley and Brian Chinn (Maddi and Josh); Paul and Brenda Hartley (Nathaniel, and Alyssa); Jennie and Dave Oulton (Katie). Lorrie is predeceased by her beloved husband Russ, and her 3 Sisters, Gloria, Mavis, and Shirley.
A memorial service will be held on June 25, 2022, at 1:00 pm, at the United Baptist Church in Old Town, Maine. Interment will follow immediately after the service, at the Hudson Cemetery on Rt. 43. Following the interment, Lorrie’s children invite all to a time of light refreshments and sharing of memories at the home of Brian and Shirley Chinn (267 4th St., Old Town, ME).
