Alan Giles Reynolds

Old Town – Alan Giles Reynolds, 77, passed away on April 24, 2016 at the Maine Veterans Home in Bangor. Alan was born on January 11, 1939, in Winnipeg, Canada a son of Cecil John and Alice Starr (Pike) Reynolds.

Alan was an Old Town High School graduate, Class of 1957 and graduated from the University of Maine with an Associate of Science degree in 1973, and a Bachelor’s of Science degree in 1976. Alan served four years in the Navy during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He served as an Air Force policeman at the Air National Guard base, while also as a reserve police officer for the City of Old Town. Looking for more of a challenge, Alan then went to the University of Maine Police and Security Department. In the earlier years there, he was also a Deputy Sheriff for Penobscot County. Once at the University, he knew he found a home. He worked his way up through the ranks, and achieved the position of Director of Public Safety, a position that he held until his retirement in 2000. While there, he worked successfully to have the Police Division become Certified Police Officers by the Maine Criminal Justice Academy.

Alan was a long time member of the Northeast Campus and University Security Association (NECUSA) serving on the executive board as Treasurer and President. He was very passionate about NECUSA’s Self-Reliance Award and worked hard to make sure it had continued funding during his time in NECUSA. The award is given annually to provide funds for students who are direct relatives of NECUSA members. In 2004, the award was unanimously renamed the Alan Reynolds Self-Reliance Award.

He was President of the Maine Campus and University Security Association, President of the Maine Chiefs of Police, and was a Founding Chief of the Penobscot Computer Law Enforcement System (PCLES). He worked with the University Athletic Department and the Bangor Daily News to produce the first “Kids and Cops” collectible trading cards and involved area Police Departments in the distribution of these cards.

In Old Town, he was a member of the City Council and served one term as President of the City Council, Mayor of Old Town. He was an active member of the Parish of the Resurrection. There he served as a Eucharistic minister and was involved in the RCIA program.

Alan was also a member of the Eastern Maine Model Railroad Club and loved to travel. He loved spending time with his family and always had his camera in hand at every Christmas, birthday party, anniversary, graduation, wedding and even “Sunday Meeting.” He enjoyed many years camping with his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Theresa; and three daughters, Alison Dufour and her husband Jamie, Karen Thibault and her husband David, and Susan Bagley and her husband Ernie and Grandchildren; Tyler, Josh and Alexa Dufour, Stephanie Thibault, Kate Ginish, and her husband Kirk, Margaret and Jonathan Bagley. He was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Alison.

The family wishes to thank Alan’s many friends who came to visit him including those from the Railroad Club and many others. A special thanks to Charlie Chandler, who stayed by his side until the end.

Friends and family will gather to celebrate Alan’s life 2-4 and 6-8 PM Thursday at the Birmingham Funeral Home 438 Main St Old Town, where members of the Knights of Columbus will recite prayers at 7:30pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10AM Friday at Parish of the Resurrection, Holy Family Church, Old Town. Burial with police and military honors, will follow at Lawndale Cemetery, Old Town. All are then invited to return to the Parish Hall for a light luncheon and continued fellowship.
