Kenneth I Meyer, 70, born in New Britain, Connecticut on May 30, 1943 to the late Kenneth W. Meyer of Clinton and the late June D. Lull of Westbrook, lost his battle with mesothelioma on July 16, 2013. Ken is survived by his beloved wife, Karen (Swanson) of almost 50 years, daughters Elizabeth of Ipswich Massachusetts and Amy of Ivoryton and son Wade of Columbus, Ohio. He also leaves behind his sisters, Donna Oberg of Albuquerque and Gail Espejo of San Diego. Ken was the loving grandfather to Christopher and Matthew Meyer and Joseph and Nina Dakin. Ken is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews; a wonderful family man who loved us all.
Ken grew up in Westbrook, Connecticut, a graduate of Westbrook High School and was a member of the Westbrook Chemical Engine Company No 1 and Westbrook Ambulance Association. Ken was a fireman in the Navy on the destroyer USS Sullivan and one of the first EMTs in Connecticut. Working for 46 years in the printing industry, including 24 years for R.R. Donnelley & Sons in Old Saybrook as well as in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Ken retired in 2009.
A residence of Killingworth for 38 years, Ken enjoyed cruising with Karen in Europe, the Caribbean and the Pacific Northwest. Ken played soccer and ran track in high school and played softball into his forties. He coached his children in football and softball and was always ready to cheer them on in swimming, gymnastics, track, volleyball and softball. Ken and Karen enjoyed going to the local antique shows and building his collection of model sailboats and cast iron figures. Ken was a lifelong Green Bay Packer fan and with his 1 stock loved “being one of the owners.”
Calling hours will be at the Swan Funeral Home in Old Saybrook on Friday, July 26th from 5:00-7:00 pm and funeral services will be held at the Swan Funeral Home in Old Saybrook on Saturday, July 27 at noon with a burial at Riverside Cemetery on Sheffield Street, Old Saybrook. A reception will follow at the Westbrook Chemical Engine Company No 1 hall in Westbrook Center.
