Joseph James Nanfito Sr., 82, of Hebron Ct., Formally of Old Saybrook Ct., passed away after a lengthy illness on September 28, 2024, at home, with his wife of nearly 46 years, Polly Ann Nanfito, at his side. Born and raised in Portland, a 1960 graduate of PHS. At the age of 17 during the Vietnam Conflict, he enlisted in the US Navy and served his country for 22 years, retiring as a Petty Officer 1st Class. He served at several shore duty stations and aboard the USS Thor ARC4 and the USS William R Rush DD714. Upon retirement from military service, he became a member of the USPS for 16 years serving in Westbrook, Chester, and East Haddam.
Upon retirement from the postal service, Joe and Polly Ann became snowbirds between Ct. and Florida where they resided until their return to Ct. last year. Joe enjoyed singing in Barber Shop Quartets and choruses in Fl and Ct. Joe always had a joke or 2 to tell, sometimes they were funny, sometimes not so much. Joe and Polly enjoyed camping all around the country. He is a member of the Veterans of the Vietnam War Middletown, American Legion Post 113 Old Saybrook where he served as the Financial Officer, and American Legion Post 0285 in Englewood Fl.
In addition to his wife, Joe is survived by their blended children: John Jarusik of Lebanon, Ct who has been one of his caretakers for the last 8 years, Jay Nanfito of Missouri, Amy Hathaway (Josh Murch) of Waterford, Ct, Mary Stone of Missouri, and Michelle McCarthy (Bruce) of Higganum, Ct. also 5 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Also 2 brothers, Vincent Jr. (Stacy) of Southington, Ct. and Ronald (Peggy) of Moodus, Ct. Several nieces and nephews. Brother in law Charles A. Maxfield and sister in law Constance Lezenby of Pa.
Joe was predeceased by his parents Vincent S. Nanfito Sr. and Josephine (Lastrina) Nanfito, brother Phillip J. Nanfito Sr., and his wife Patricia of Southington, and nephew Vincent S. Nanfito 3rd.
A memorial service for Joe will be held on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, at 10:15am, at Swan Funeral Home, located at 1224 Boston Post Rd, Old Saybrook, Ct. Graveside services will be held at the columbarium section of the State Veterans Cemetery in Middletown, with full military honors, on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, at 12pm.
