Dave (aka Dad and Poppy) was born on January 26, 1943 to David Eugene Sams and Dorothy Slater Sams. He is survived by his beloved wife Betsy Bates Sams as well as his three wonderful children (just ask them) and their even more amazing spouses (a confirmed fact): Katie Sams and Matthew Johnson; Andrew and Monica Sams; and Ben and Hilary Sams. Dave is also survived by his eight perfect (in his eyes) grandchildren: Sophie and Emmeline Johnson; Jacob and Noah Sams; and Hannah, Max, William and Caroline Sams. His brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Ken and Christine Bates, also figure among his surviving family, as do his nieces and nephews on both sides. Dave was preceded in death by his parents and his dear sister and her husband, Patricia and Rivers Singleton.
Born in Louisville, Kentucky, Dave moved with his family to South Florida when he was nine years old, graduating from high school in Fort Lauderdale. Dave’s parents then moved back “home” to Louisville, and he quickly followed. Over the years, Dave often said that he had to get “home” in order to find his soulmate Betsy, whom he met at the University of Louisville. Dave and Betsy were married in 1967, enjoying 56 years of love, friendship, fellowship and laughter together.
Dave worked in the life insurance industry throughout his career. His first job was at Commonwealth Life, and he retired from Mass Mutual Life some 30 years later. Dave subsequently re-retired from Sammons Enterprises and re-re-retired from Delaware Life. He continued to work as a consultant until his very last day, claiming that he much preferred work to golf. (It appears he was better at it too!)
Throughout his life, Dave was involved in community and church. He was proud of his over 50-year association with the United Way and dedicated to his service in five church congregations. A seasoned volunteer, Dave was also on the boards of many other organizations. He took such engagements seriously, reflecting his commitment to “give back” in any way he could.
Never idle, Dave packed a lot into each day, including a crossword puzzle or two and frequent social engagements with his and Betsy’s many friends. Always up for an activity, Dave enjoyed fly-fishing, bridge, taking in his children’s and grandchildren’s various events, and even managed to get talked into a few mountain climbing expeditions. Dave and Betsy loved travelling the world (often with favorite traveling companions) as well as spending time at home with the many family members and friends who availed themselves of their gracious hospitality.
A perpetual “glass half full” person, Dave did not waste time complaining and always tried to see the best in everyone. He will be sorely missed.
Dave’s memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm on October 17 at the First Congregational Church of Old Lyme, Connecticut (on the corner of Lyme Street and Ferry Road).
In lieu of flowers, donations in Dave’s memory can be made to United Against Poverty (UP) of Indian River County (1400 27th Street, Vero Beach, Florida 32960) or the charity of your choice.
