Old Lyme – Richard “Dick”, “Cookie”, “Uncle Dickie” Cook, 91 of Rowland Road, died Monday, March 26, 2018 at Bride Brook Healthcare in Niantic with the comfort of family by his side. He was the widower of Patricia (Rapp) Cook, his wife of 45 years, who passed in 2017.
Dick was born in Norwich, CT on March 23, 1927, the son of the late Anthony and Elizabeth (Podurgiel) Cook. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was honorably discharged with the rank of Seaman First Class.
Dick enjoyed a 40-year career involved in the care and management of golf courses. He got his feet wet working at Norwich Golf Course as a Foreman which led him to Golf Course Superintendent at Old Lyme Country Club. In 1966 he was called upon to be Superintendent at the new Robert Trent Jones designed Black Hall Club in Old Lyme where he stayed for many years before finally heading to Hunter Memorial Golf Course in Meriden. While at Hunter Memorial he helped to improve golf play by so much that it resulted in a one year shut down for renovations to handle the flood of new golfers. Dick retired from Hunter in 1994. Aside from being a Superintendent of golf courses, he was also an accomplished golfer and carried a 2 handicap for many years.
Dick is survived by his daughter Pamela Gould of Old Lyme, son Douglas Hart of Oregon, son Michael Hart and his wife Sandra of Old Saybrook, granddaughters Shelby Hart of Charleston, SC and Samantha Hart of Old Saybrook, brothers Anthony “Tony” Cook of Danbury and Joseph “Joey” Cook of Norwich and lots of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Edward “Abby” Cook and sisters Dora Batey, Gloria Roman and Elizabeth Hoelck.
A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, April 3, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. in Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home, 13 Beckwith Lane, Old Lyme, CT. A visiting hour will be held from 2:00 until 3:00 p.m. in the funeral home. Please visit www.fultontherouxoldlyme.com for photos, tributes and directions.
