The family of Richard Henry Card of Old Lyme is greatly saddened to announce his passing at the age of 85, on June 25, 2018 at Beechwood Post Acute and Transitional Care in New London. Richard was born on August 1, 1932, the fourth of six children, to George and Bertha Card in their home in Groton, Connecticut.
Richard served in the U.S Air Force from 1951 – 1955, two of these years were served overseas with the 5th Air Rescue Squadron.
Following his time in the service, he returned to Connecticut where he met and married Virginia Elaine Paul on October 12, 1957. Together they had two daughters, Susan and Amee.
He then worked as a truck driver, and was a part of the Teamsters Local 493, for 37 years until his retirement.
Richard appreciated the simple things in life; his family and pets were sources of great joy for him throughout the years. He was an avid fan of the Miami Dolphins, the New York Giants and Uconn Huskies Women’s basketball team. In his retirement years, he enjoyed breakfast with the company of his friends on Mondays.
To his family, Richard will always be remembered as a gentle and loving husband, father, and grandfather with an occasionally mischievous sense of humor. He is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years, Virginia Card, his daughters Amee Card and Susan Potts, his grandchildren Justin Potts and Lindsey Potts, his brother Edwin Card, and his sister Edith Paradis and her family. He is predeceased by his siblings Eunice LaBoue, George Card, and Loren Card. He will be always loved and forever missed, but never gone from our hearts.
In lieu of flowers, the family humbly requests donations to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research in his honor. Calling hours for those who would like to pay their respects to Richard and his family will be at Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home in Old Lyme on Saturday, June 30th at 1:30 pm and a memorial service will begin at 2 pm.
