A native of Lyme, Lucius (called Dick by members of the family) attended Lyme Consolidated School, Old Lyme High School, and graduated from Tufts University in 1964 with a degree in engineering. While at Tufts, the School of Engineering elected him to Tau Beta Pi, the profession’s honor society. He worked for thirty years at the Underwater Sound Lab in New London. He was a sixty year member of Lyme Congregational Church in Hamburg and Lyme Grange #147 and was a quiet and generous supporter of many Lyme organizations. He enjoyed playing golf and bridge and excelled in all card games. Lucius also enjoyed mowing the lawn and cutting and splitting wood to burn in the winter. He was a lifelong and avid reader, a master at jig saw puzzles, and like his father, had great mechanical abilities. Among other things, he built a Heathkit color television and a pinball machine that was enjoyed by the family for a generation. A quiet man, he was good natured, helpful, kind, and generous. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Lucius was a strong supporter of his alma mater and many local organizations, including Lyme Grange #147, Lyme Congregational Church, Lyme Public Hall Association, Lyme Ambulance Association, Lyme Fire Company, and Lyme Land Trust. Those wishing to make a donation in his memory can do so to any of these fine institutions.
A private funeral service was held at the North Lyme Cemetery in Hamburg. A public memorial service will take place during the summer.
