Joseph L. Barlow Sr, 100, passed away on August 28, 2015 at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital, New London, CT. Mr. Barlow is predeceased by his beloved wife of 70 years, Helen L. Johns, his mother and father and 7 sisters.
Mr. Barlow was born on March 4, 1915 in Murray, Utah to Joseph Barlow and Annie Laura Lee Barlow. He honorably served in the US Navy during World War II during Pearl Harbor. He then went on to become a Marine Engineer, retiring after twenty years from Electric Boat, General Dynamics. He was the son of Joseph Smith Barlow, a Mormon Minister and a direct descendent of Joseph Smith Barlow , the founder of the Mormon Church of Salt Lake City, Utah. He graduated from No. Hollywood High School and as a young lad delivered the mail to May West and watched the “The Our Gang Comedy” being filmed on his street. He was a multi-talented person who played the organ and could fix anything, was an avid gardener and loved poetry. He had glorious tales for his grandchildren of life in the old west, of Tom Mix and riding rodeo. “Oh I have slipped the surly bond of earth, and danced the skies on laughter’s silvered wings; sunward I’ve climbed and joined the tumbling mirth. Of sun-split clouds and done a Hundred things.
Mr. Barlow is survived by his son, Joseph L. Barlow Jr and wife Linda. Daughters Beverly Barlow Davies and husband Fred, Bonnie Barlow Cerruti, Helen Barlow Slocum and Nina Barlow Schmid, ten grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and two great, great grandchildren.
