In science, the measure of volume is displacement or how much space is taken up within an area.  Much like the measurement of volume, the "impact" of someone is measured by how much they fill another person's life.  

And just as the object being removed creates a void that represents "less volume", when Joyce passed, we all felt an emptiness.

Joyce had a tremendous impact on everyone she met, especially her family.   Her life was devoted to "filling" the lives of others with Love.

Joyce was a big part of my life, particularly in my younger years, as our families traveled throughout the world together.

In more recent years it has given me great comfort to see and talk with Joyce, particularly since my Mother passed away.  Again, her passing has created a void within me.

Sundays at the beach, Christmases, Holidays, Birthdays, and Joyce's smile are engrained in my memory.  

Although she's gone, the impact of her life and love still fill my heart and memories.  The "volume" of her life will remain in everyone she has touched.  I know her life has touched me in many ways and the impact will remain with me for the rest of my life.

I remember Aunt Joyce the first time I saw her, she had a smile on her face, always a compliment and made you smile too.I love her and her family so very much. She will be missed by all!!!

Although I only knew Joyce for five years, we hit it off and had great times together.  We enjoyed the same things - shopping, scrapbooking, searching through antique and junk stores, and shopping.  We shared a lot of laughs and I marveled at how easy she put a meal on the table.  She was quite a lady!

Joyce:  A soldier, my friend, my cousin's loving bride, more than a cousin, a home-maker, an exemplary house keeper, a caring mother, a valued helper during troubling times, and a calming influence on her and on my young families.  Oh Marlin!

I had been meaning to write this letter a lot sooner. Just wanted to share with you what Joyce meant to me..I met Joyce when I first moved to Nashville back in 2003. Mark & I Had just gotten married & I was a new nurse starting my new job in MICU at Summit. She was the secretary in MICU...but that title did not do her justice at all...Saying she kept that place in line & running smoothly is also an understatement. You could say she was the sunshine in a sometimes very cloudy place. She always has a kind word to say..& also had a very assertive way of telling the truth. She had her way of keeping order to a place that could be very chaotic. She was a good friend who always made time to listen. She was a lady who loved her family very much, who spoke of them often & made her friends feel like they were part of her family too. She was a very hard worker who never complained. She loved to laugh & her laughter was very contagious, Joyce was a great friend of who I am a better person for having the opportunity of knowing...& look forward to seeing again some day...

When I think of how to accept and care for people, I think of what you would do.  You are the definition of a servant’s heart.  You and I had a special relationship that makes me smile and I know you’re grinning about right now.  Joyce you have a special place in my heart that you planted and will never fade. I feel so blessed to have met you. I know it was a short timeframe in which we spent together, but that time will never be forgotten. You were one of the most amazing people I have ever met. I'd honestly say that even if you weren't my grandma. You are my inspiration, my motivation. Every day I strive to be more like you. You have a smile that could light up ANY room.  And the sound of your voice.. I can still hear you saying, "love you more"..That has to be one of the sweetest sounds on earth. You have the the best sense of humor and your laugh is so contagious. Everyone at work always talks about how wonderful you are. Ya know, the funny thing is when someone knows you're my grandma, they don't even have to know me to like me! Ha! That says a lot about you grandma! It’s going to be really tough to follow in your footsteps!  You have been such a blessing and touched so many lives. You are such a special lady. I am so honored and proud to call you my grandma. Thank you for always being there for me.. for being my grandma, and my friend. 

I remember being at your house on one of our scrapbook dates. I was so intrigued by you and pawpaw. You guys were telling me all about how you met, and your first date, etc. I don't think I've EVER seen you smile so big!! I remember thinking,  I hope I still feel that way after being married for OVER 50 years!  You guys have been the best role model .  Pawpaw said I could borrow your pearl necklace to wear on my wedding day :) I can't wait to shine for you!  I hope you're brushing up on those dancing skills!

I remember the day I came over to your house with Brad to meet you. I was really nervous but you made me feel so at home and loved right from the very start. Thank you so much for letting me be a part of your family and for making me feel so special. Everyone says they have the best Mom, well my Mom was the standard.  I want to smile when I think of my Mom.  We should all do that, that’s what she always did.  She was always able to look on the bright side and take the good with the bad.  When times were tough, she’d say “Knock it off” and then get everyone back on track.  Mom taught me strength when I was faced with a challenge that no one else had experienced or knew how to handle.  She was always able to maintain a positive outlook even when it looked like the road had no end.  I rely on the strength and encouragement she showed me every day, especially with the road I now face.  Mom always laughed and her laughter was very contagious!  She and I would laugh like school girls about to get in trouble and couldn’t stop.  She had no problem even laughing at herself, I love that about her.  I strive to be like that.  Mom could accomplish more in one day than a normal person could get done in two.  She was always busy!!  She lived to work for others, devoting her time to my Dad, my sister, and my brothers.  As I work to be the mother of my family, I look to her example.  Mom loved us!  She didn’t just show love, she was love.  She was always last, she put everyone in her life ahead of herself.  She is my standard.  I love you Mom, keep me smiling! Carol

A note to my friend:  I first met Joyce in 1956 when she and I were stationed in Arlington, VA at the US national security headquarters.  Joyce was Army and I was Navy.  Our friends told me that she wanted to go out with me. I made it a point to meet her at the water fountain. After she dropped her papers from the third time, I told to go to her desk and set down. Shortly after that, she got out of the Army and went back to Iowa, only to return to Arlington as a civilian. That was it. In the next 55 years, we were blessed with four children and that started a string of events. Joyce I love you very very much. Rest in peace I know you are in God’s hands. Even though I've had the privilege of knowing Joyce for only 5 or 6 years, she made me feel like I was a part of the family from the start, as she did with everyone else.  Always smiling and making sure all was comfortable, in her home or on the camping trips that I attended.  I can only guess...that must have been her way.  So it seems funny to call her Joyce, or Mrs Hoy.  So I'll do one better, it would be an honor to call her MaMa!  You are surely missed, but not forgotten!

My dear sweet MaMa,Thank you for being a wonderful grandmother to me and great grandmother to my baby girl.  I pray that I will be just a perfect as you were in that role. You are a beautiful person, inside and out and I’m so glad I get to see your beautiful smile every time I look at my mom’s face – she looks just like you.  I know we’ll see each other again one day but until then, I know you’re looking down on all of us and you’re proud of what you see.  I’ll do everything I can to keep it that way. I am truly blessed to have had you as such a huge part of my life. You were amazing here on earth and I know you’re probably even more amazing in heaven. I always have a very warm and wonderful feeling when I think about Aunt Joyce. I used to love to hear her laugh and I agree with others that she had a wonderful smile. Our prayers are with you all!

I had the wonderful opportunity of meeting Joyce a couple of times through the years because of our family connection.
Her son Brad is married to my sweet sister JJ (Mary Jane)  
But I truly got to know the loving and caring person she was by listening to how her family praised and adored her.  My mother thought she was so nice and enjoyed her when she would go back to Tennessee to visit. (And Mama was a good judge of Character!)  Hold her memories in your heart and they will make you laugh and cry with joy as you remember the beautiful person she was and you will find comfort knowing you have an Angel watching over you.

Its very hard for us to understand why such a great and wonderful person has left us.  We have been friends for over 40 years. We first met in Demendre, 
Turkey and became like brothers and 
sisters.  Joyce always treated us like
