Kathryn Mae D Gunn Armstrong Miller affectionately known as “Nanny” of Olathe, Kansas passed away on July 25, 2024 at the age of 93. She was born on July 26, 1930 in Kilmichael, Mississippi where she grew up enjoying working with her father on projects including tree cutting, house building and remodeling, and gardening.
She graduated from Madame CJ Walker School of cosmetology in 1953 and earned certificates in Early Childhood Education from Emporia State from 1968 to 1975.
She worked as a dry-cleaning attendant; as a teacher’s aide in Olathe School District and Head Start; as an entrepreneur in various small business ventures; as Beautician and as Director and owner of Fairview Child Care Center.
Early in life she was involved in her children’s school activities and community improvement projects.
She gave her life to Christ at an early age while living in West, MS. This began her long life of service to God and her community. Some of the ways she was actively involved in the Church of God in Christ were as a hospitality host, a missionary, YPWW leader, Sunshine band leader, and an Assistant to the District Missionary of the Wyandotte District. She attended churches in West, MS at St. Joseph COGIC and in Olathe, KS at St. Luke COGIC until the Lord led her and her husband Elder George Miller to start a ministry church in Gardner, KS “Reaching out for Souls”. She remained faithful to the church until she left this world for the home the Lord prepared for her.
She was preceded in death by her father D. Gunn and mother Lemmie Queen, Brother Walter Garrett, Sisters Letha Walker and Mamie Green, Husbands Edward Armstrong Sr and George Miller, daughter Yvonne Armstrong and Grandson Christopher Thompkins, Great Grandchildren Kathryn Shay Armstrong and Israel Armstrong.
She is survived by her children Edward Armstrong Jr (Cathy), William Armstrong Sr, Taivia Street (Jonathan), and Queen Fiffer (Donnell); Grandchildren Turner Armstrong III (Lori), Cassandra Human (Will), Grant Armstrong, Gwendolyn Abbott (Peter), Richmond Armstrong (Meghan), Abdul Armstrong, Reuben Armstrong (Candice), Rachel Armstrong, William D Armstrong Jr (Rachel), Jamaine Armstrong (Cathy), Deon Fiffer, and Lemmie Queen Fiffer; Great Grandchildren Gino, Victoria, Thaddeus, Bella, Lilly, Sal, Carmella, CJ, Nicholai, Israel, Ryssa, Ryland, Reece, Reaghan, Rohman, Ariana, Riley, Jamir, Kenyon, Nova, Denver, Nia, Zolan, Nadia; daughters in love, Tivol Lewis, Shirley Berry and Deborah Graft Brown.
Nieces, Bishop Gail Roberts House and Dolly Mae Ratliff along with a host of cousins, great nieces and great nephews and many friends.
She was “Nanny” to anyone who came along.
The family would like to thank the Olathe community, Reaching Out for Souls church family, Doctor Rita Oplotnik and Olathe Health for the care and compassion shown to our loved one in her final days.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Visitation at McGilley and Frye Funeral Home 105 E. Loula St. Olathe, KS on Friday August 2, 2024 at 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Homegoing Service will be held at the Gardner Church of the Nazarene, 16640 N Moonlight Road Gardner, KS on Saturday August 3, 2024 at 12:00 noon Visitation will begin at 11:00 am.
Interment to follow at a later date in West, Mississippi.
