Grace Margaret Armstrong Moody passed away very early Wednesday morning, January 25, 2023. She was born January 29, 1915, to Charley and Pearl (Edgmand) Armstrong at home on the farm in Columbus, KS. Grace was the oldest daughter and second of 7 children. She graduated from Cherokee County Community High School in 1933 and began working at Farm Security Administration in Columbus, where she met her husband, Edward F. Moody.
They were married on January 31, 1942, and lived in Little Rock, AR, and Sharon, PA while Ed served in the Army. After the service, they lived in Phillipsburg, KS; Brookings, SD; Smithville, MO; and finally in Olathe, KS, where they owned and operated the Frigid Food Lockers until 1968. Grace then worked for the Sheriff's Office, until she retired in 1980.
Grace is preceded in death by her parents in 1967 and 1979; her husband, 1994; all 4 of her brothers, 1 sister, and 7 nephews.
Grace was known to be a wonderful cook, especially pies, cinnamon rolls, and fried chicken. She also was a voracious reader. She read constantly until her eyes would no longer let her, then her daughter, Alice, took over the duty and read to her. She was also a marvelous quilter and made many beautiful quilts and quilted with members of the First Presbyterian Church of Olathe and the Kansas Grange Quilters.
Grace is survived by her 3 daughters, Ann (Keith) Johnson, Olathe, KS; Charlene Prine, Springfield, MO; Alice (Mike)Ficken, Gardner, KS; 7 grandchildren, Brandy (Brian) Hickman, Springfield, MO; Chris (Pam) Ficken, Wellsville, KS; Kiel Johnson, Shandon, CA; Jason (Jenn) Prine, Pierce City, MO; Brett Johnson, Lawrence, KS; Adrienne (Luke) Morgan, Olathe, KS; Curt (Cyndi) Ficken, Gardner, KS and 10 great-grandchildren, Ethan and Ashton Prine; Lorna and Paige Ficken; Abby and Piper Hickman; Emory, Montgomery, Kendry and Callon Morgan. She is also survived by one sister, June Mitts of KC, KS; 11 nieces and 1 nephew and a special friend, Alice Ruth Smotherman who faithfully volunteered at Good Samaritan to help her play Bingo once every week. Also, a special thanks to all those at Good Samaritan for the care given to our mother over the past 9 years.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Grace's memory to the Kansas State Grange at 10321 78th St., Ozawkie, KS 66070, or Olathe Hospice at 15310 S. Marion St., Olathe, KS 66061.
A visitation for Grace will be held Monday, January 30, 2023, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM followed by a funeral service from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM, at McGilley-Frye Funeral Home, 105 E. Loula Street, Olathe, KS 66061. A committal service will take place Monday, January 30, 2023, from 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM at Mount Washington Cemetery, 614 Brookside, Independence, MO 64053.
