Walter Franklin Mayfield passed away on June 12, 2023, in his hometown of Cashion Oklahoma. He was born on September 22, 1970 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He was the son of Willie Ben Mayfield and Carla Jean Gunter. Walter was a son, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and a friend and neighbor to all.
In his youth Walter was a carefree spirit who sported a mullet and a bandanna. He was athletic and loved riding his bike, jumping ramps, playing football, basketball and riding horses or hanging at the lake with his family. He liked fast cars and loud music. He had a good character which drew others to him.
Walter faced many challenges in his life, suffering a traumatic brain injury in his early twenties Walter fought to re-learn to walk, adjust to his new limitations and was often restricted by his own body from participating in some of the activities he loved most. His personality and memory were affected greatly. He lost friends and suffered through the hardship of being shunned by strangers, friends and at times family he held the most dear.
Despite these circumstances, like his father before him Walter was a selfless man, who often gave to others, without expecting anything in return. He loved without condition, though he was quick to anger, he was quicker to forgive. Family and home were important to him. He was a simple man, who fell in love with one woman, built a family and continued to love her throughout the duration of his life. Walter was loyal to a fault. He was an animal lover, often bringing in strays. Walter was a hard worker, helping his family and neighbors solve problems, whether it was changing a tire, building a fence, mowing a yard or digging a ditch. Walter was a giver, he stayed busy despite his physical limitations. Walter was hard headed and had a fighting spirit, he refused to quit. He was a proud man, he worked as a painter, working with his brother, father and son for most of his life. Walter brought an unexpected smile into a dark room and was a small light in a dim world. He will forever be missed and loved by those he has left behind.
God saw him getting tired and chose to bring him home. The viewing will be held on Friday June 16, 2023 from 10:00 A.M. - 8:00 P.M. services will be held on Saturday June 17, 2023 at 10:00 A.M. at Chapel Hill Funeral Home with graveside services to follow at Spring Creek Cemetery, Walter will be laid to rest at the feet of his father Willie Ben Mayfield.
