Walter was born to Emery and Era ( Lawrence ) Bonham on June 15th, 1919 in Bonham , Texas . At the age of 2, Walter's family moved to Beggs , Oklahoma . Walter served his country in the Army during WWII. He saw combat action as an armored tank driver in Sicily & Italy. After his Army duty was completed he returned to Beggs where he worked as a dirt contractor in the area for many years. After moving to Oklahoma City in 1961, he began working for the Department of Oklahoma American Legion and did so until his retirement. While working for the American Legion, Walter was elected Post Commander & District Commander in the Bethany-Warr Acres Post #12. He then was elected Oklahoma State Commander and served with distinction. Walter served as a Senior Counselor and Staff Member at Oklahoma Boys State for over 50 years.
He is survived by his son Wesley Bonham Jr. and wife Elba of Monroeville, Alabama, daughter Barbara Davis & husband Mike of Stigler, Oklahoma, daughter Meredith Davis of Yukon, Oklahoma, step-daughter-in-law Sheri Champlin of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, sister Hazel Greer & husband Jerry of Cincinnati, Ohio; brother Lawrence Bonham & wife Betty of Beggs, Oklahoma; sister-in-law Leona Bonham of Tulsa, Oklahoma; 10 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren, and Mary Edith Shipp, the mother of his 4 children as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents, wife of 38 years Pauline , son John David Bonham, stepson Lee Champlin, brother Gene Bonham, and son-in-law L.B. Davis.
Services are to be held Friday, September 7th, at 1:00 pm at the Hahn-Cook Funeral Chapel - 6600 Broadway Extension Service Road, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Edmond, Oklahoma .
Visitation and viewing will be from 8:00AM to 8:00PM Thursday, September 6, at Hahn-Cook.
