She spent most of her childhood in Ponca City with the exception of a short time in Lake Charles, Louisiana where she graduated from Lake Charles High School in 1946. After graduation, she attended McNeese Jr. College in Lake Charles before heading off to SMU and John Sealy School for Nurses in Galveston, Texas, where she received her training as a registered nurse.
She married Glen Dewayne (Smokey) Simmons on August 13, 1949. Her organza dress was on the cover of Vogue Magazine. She spent the first years of marriage working at Hillcrest Hospital in south Oklahoma City before returning to school at Oklahoma City University where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in English Literature with a minor in Secondary Education.
Teeny took education very seriously and graduated with Cum Laude Honors citation while working nights at the hospital and raising three children.
She went on to teach Honors English at Hefner Jr. High School and retired from Putnam City West in 1990.
After retirement, she spent much of her time as an Auxiliary Volunteer at Baptist Hospital. Teeny loved traveling and made many trips to Europe and the Holy Lands and Hawaii. Closer to home she and Smokey spent time with their many close friends, playing cards and dominoes, watching OU football and taking trips to the lake and Branson.
She was an avid reader and loved being outside and taking walks. She knew her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at a young age and continued to find love and comfort in Him through her last days. She spent her last six years at Grace Living Center where she was treated with such love and compassion.
Teeny will be greatly missed by those of us left behind and greatly welcomed by those who have gone before her.
