Sandy Hardin Singleton, Edmond, Oklahoma, passed away on Saturday, October 2, 2010, at Integris Hospice House. Sandy was born December 19, 1928 in Duncan, Oklahoma, the youngest child of Sandy H. and Gussie Singleton. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Robert Singleton and Royce Singleton, and a sister, Mina Harrison.
Sandy attended Plato School in Duncan, Culbertson Heights Grade School, and Northeast High School in Oklahoma City graduating in May 1946. He graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1951 with a degree in Geological Engineering and served in the Air Force as a radar maintenance officer for two years. Sandy spent over 60 years in the oil business, working for Carter Oil, Superior Oil, and Perkins Production, before establishing Singleton Exploration Company as an independent consulting geologist. He was also an institutional stockbroker for Merrill Lynch.
Sandy was married to Lila Mae Corkle of Oklahoma City for 60 years. He is survived by wife Lila; daughter and son-in-law Amy and Gary Capshaw of Dallas, TX; son and daughter-in-law Sandy and Jacquelyn Singleton of Bartlesville, OK; son and daughter-in-law Tim and Jan Singleton of Edmond, OK; grandchildren Lyndsay, Ryan, Kate, Skye, and Jessica; several cousins, and a host of nieces and nephews.
Sandy was a scratch golfer, who took up the game as a teenager, made eight holes in one, and was the Oak Tree Country Club Sr. Amateur Champion and a three-time Kickingbird Golf Course Champion. He was a talented banjo player and enthusiastically promoted the love of the instrument. As a founding board member of the American Banjo Museum which opened in 2009 in Oklahoma City, he realized a lifelong dream of helping establish a museum dedicated to the history and art of banjo music. He loved OU football and basketball, traveling the world, Dixieland jazz, family vacations, his dogs, and good barbecue. He was our hero, and living with him was a celebration of life. We will miss his witty conversation, booming laugh, and his loving, fair guidance.
Sandy was an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Oklahoma City for 24 years, where he served as an Elder, Board Trustee, and a member of the choir. A memorial service will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 4400 N.
