Norma B. Sutton

Norma Berniece was born on April 20, 1921 to John and Nancy (Cannie) VanSickle at the home place, 416 North A. Street in Morris, Oklahoma. And Morris is where she grew up, graduated from high school and met the love of her life, Carlos Victor Sutton who was, at that time, with the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camp located at the edge of town. Carlos and Berniece honored her father’s wish for them not to marry until she was 19. So Carlos called for Berniece on the morning of her 19th birthday and they drove to Oklahoma City, were married and returned to her parents’ home to share the good news. And so began a beautiful 65 year love story, so very rare, and a precious prodigy for their two daughters. As many brides did, Berniece waited out those war years with a new baby and her husband overseas. Carlos came home and began a 43 year career with the Soil Conservation Service, starting in Miami, Oklahoma where he and Berniece lived for 18 years and raised two daughters. They then spent a happy and full life in Claremore for 32 years where they built a new home, were active in church activities and ministry and enjoyed many friends. Berniece decided with the Claremore move that she would start using her first name. So “Norma” especially enjoyed singing in the church choir, being a deacon’s wife, and working part time as a TG&Y cashier. Mostly she loved her family. In 1998, Norma and Carlos moved into an apartment at Spanish Cove Life Care Community in Yukon. Carlos went to his heavenly home in 2005 and his “Niecie” joined him on September 22nd, 2013.

Norma is survived by two daughters, Cathy Staley, Del City and Camille Lehmann and husband Fred, Bethel Acres; three grandchildren, Misty Staley and her daughters, Kylie, Alyssa and MaKayla; Mark Staley and wife Allison and their sons Ethan and Austin; and Scott Lehmann and wife Kathleen and their sons, Joshua, Matthew and Andrew and other much loved relatives and friends. The family would like to thank the staff of Spanish Cove Pavilion for their friendship and loving care over the past 2 ½ years.

We already miss this tiny little lady who truly loved her family most of all. Her memorial service will be at Chapel Hill Funeral Home on Saturday, September 28th at 2 pm with Reverend Larry Moff officiating.
