Margaret M. Howard

Margaret Howard was born July 11, 1931, in Nashville, TN. Shortly after birth, Albert Roy Martin and Tula Louise Lowthorp Martin adopted her. In 1935, she moved with her family to Oklahoma City where her father had one of the first Orange Julius franchises. Margaret attended OKC schools and graduated in 1949 from the old Classen High School. She attended OU and graduated in 1953 with a BS in Education. She was a PE teacher in Greensboro NC and worked in public recreation in Winston-Salem. In 1975 Margaret returned to OKC and was employed at Plugge’s Upholstery for 18 years. Margaret did not have biological children but her extended family and friends were special to her. Her niece Cheryl Lebow of Oklahoma City was her caregiver on numerous occasions and she wanted to thank the entire Lebow family for their loving care. Margaret’s major interest and focus in life was golf. She confessed that she missed the entire civil rights movement because she was on the golf course! She had the distinction of making 14 holes-in-one during her golfing “career”. Mayflower Congregational UCC was very meaningful to her. She was grateful to the church for providing social significance, intellectual opportunities and stimulation and constructive ways to help others. “Doing good” was very important. She was a driver for Retired and Senior Volunteer Program of Central OK for 10 years, volunteered at the Food Pantry at Church of the Open Arms and loved working with the students at Taft Middle School in the before school art program. Margaret’s feisty, in charge attitude and enormous stubborn streak served her well in life and as she prepared to die. She faced her death the way she lived her life, with determination and dignity. On October 12th, 2013, surrounded by her family and friends, Margaret died at Integris Hospice House. She left a legacy of strength, compassion and humor that will never be forgotten. Services will be held Friday, October 18th at 1:00 at Mayflower Congregational Church.
