Larry Keith Stevenson, age 85, passed away peacefully at his home in Oklahoma City, OK on Tuesday morning, July 23rd, 2024. He was born September 13, 1938 in Phoenix, Arizona to Charles and Lulu Stevenson. He was a devoted husband to wife, Ann, for 63 years. He joined the US Air Force at the age of 17 to serve his country where he was stationed at Laon Air Force Base, France from 1956-1959 with the 38th Supply Squadron.
He built his career starting out at TG&Y and continued to work on his education and create better opportunities for himself. He became the first ever Certified Master Mechanic in Oklahoma City, operating his own repair service where he helped build some mean hot rods. He then became an Oklahoma City Fire Fighter, serving his community for 20 years, where he retired with the rank of Major. His work ethic and desire to improve himself and accomplish his goals were key to his success.
Larry enjoyed weekend camping trips to the lake with his family, taking Ann out for some dancing, having family gatherings, and telling great stories about his '55 Chevy and some of the hot rods he helped build. He especially enjoyed using his flight simulator, watching movies like Die Hard and Independence Day, and yelling at the TV for the good guy to beat up the bad guy.
He bravely battled dementia for 14 years but never gave up his sense of humor, his will to be his best, and devotion to his family. He never stopped trying, even when things were hard for him.
Larry valued family above all else and would often let everyone know at family gatherings how much he appreciated having everyone together. He enjoyed spending time with his nieces and nephews, Gwen, Mike, and Harold, having water fights and would come up with creative ways they could all have a good time on a summer day.
He was awarded multiple awards from the city and firefighting community, most notably from the fire department for saving his neighbors life by pulling him from his burning home, and from the Oklahoma City Police Department for stopping crimes in progress on 2 different occasions. He always had the dream of attending college and made that a reality in 1997, earning spots on the Deans Honor Roll and the Provost's award for outstanding academic achievement.
He lived a life of integrity, duty, honor, humility, hard work and servitude. He would often help others in times of need and always had a soft spot for those who had been less fortunate than himself. He was the person who would stop to fix your car on the side of the road, free of charge.
Larry is survived by his wife, Ann Stevenson, son Mark Stevenson, son Scott Stevenson and his wife Karissa, grandson Tyler Stevenson and his wife Shelby, grandson Lincoln Stevenson, granddaughter Kate Stevenson, grandson Samuel Hanradt, grandson Anthony Hanradt, granddaughter Melina Hanradt, grandson Arik Hanradt, and great-grandchildren Noah, Easton, and Sebastion, nieces Gwen Green, Carleeta McNeely, and Anita Kiser and nephew Mike Smith.
He created a lasting legacy that will help make the world a better place and influenced so many.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, August 1st at Bill Eisenhower Funeral Home, 8805 NE 23rd St, Oklahoma City, OK 73141.
