Juanita (Phillips) Hayes, 103 years old of OKC, went to be with her heavenly father on Saturday, November 27, 2010. She is the daughter of Fred and Sarah Elizabeth “Bessie” (Cox) Phillips, and was born on October 10, 1907. Juanita was a graduate of Walters H.S. where she met and fell in love with Granville R. Hayes. They were married on July 30, 1928, in OKC.
Juanita and Granville made the newspaper headlines when they adopted triplets, Jean, Jack and Jim in 1939. From that moment on their lives were very active. When the children started getting older, Juanita somehow found time to play bridge, mahjong, take tap dancing, and do needlework, ceramics and was a wonderful seamstress and cook. She loved to entertain and was a gracious hostess. She was a “pink lady” at Baptist Hospital and received awards for her many hours of service. Juanita was a member of the Edgemere Historical Group and has lived in her home for almost 80 years. She was blessed with a wonderful life filled with love and her face radiated her wonderful spirit. Juanita felt proud to attend the Oklahoma Centennial event at the Capital in 2007, where she and other 100+ Oklahomans were recognized and honored for their part in our statehood.
Juanita was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Ewell Phillips; sister Geneva Shield; her loving husband, Granville, 3 sons Jack, Jim and G.R. Jr. She is survived by her devoted daughter, Jean C. (Hayes) Giles of OKC, grandchildren Cindy Hirschler and Eddie Hirschler. Great Grandchildren, Chris, Valorie, Rachel and Brandon. Great Great Grandchildren, Austin, Ashton, Avery and Aleah. She will be greatly missed by 2 nephews, Phil and his wife Deloras Shield of MWC, and Don Shield of Tulsa, and their families, and many other relatives. Of special mention is her close friend and travel companion, Jean Bench, and Lucinda (Lue) Hunter, who were with Juanita for 30 years. The family would like to thank the many caretakers who took special care of Juanita through the years; Annetta, Cheri, Cynthia, Doreen (husband Larry), and Shetia. Also Visiting Angels and Hospice of Oklahoma County. We so appreciate Dr. MaryAnn Bauman, and her staff, for the loving care and compassion they have shown for Juanita for many years.
She will always be remembered for her quick wit, beautiful smile, and generous nature. She was loved by everyone who met her. She is leaving a big empty spot in our lives, and we will all miss her greatly
