He graduated from Murray Wright High School in Detroit as part of the class of 1978, after which he would go to work for GM. He would retire from the company after many years working as a line assemblyman in their body shop. However, he would always have a passion for building custom cars. He would live in Detroit, Michigan, and Ft. Lauderdale, Florida before moving to Oklahoma in 2015.
Music was a big part of John’s life. He loved a wide variety of genres from Jazz, to RnB, to 60s and 70’s Oldies, to Hip Hop. He enjoyed making music just as much, working alongside his band to create fantastic tunes for everyone to enjoy. When he wasn’t making music, you could find him on the basketball court either coaching youth teams or shooting a few hoops himself.
Above all, he was a dedicated family man. He was proud to be a father, son, and brother, carrying the family name with honor. In 1989, he married Kathleen Burton-Marks in holy matrimony and the couple shared 30 years together. He strove to be a good role model for his three sons, raising them to be young men of quality and good character. And when he was blessed with his grandchildren, he sought to help them figure out their talents and help them grow. His perfect day would be a big family barbeque at Lake Hefner, with all the kids and grandkids, full of music and laughter.
To honor his memory, he leaves behind his children John P. Marks, Jr., wife Violeta, of Mesa, Arizona, Jamar T. Marks of Atlanta, Georgia, and JaJuan K. Marks of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; siblings Cedric Marks, wife Tammy, of Detroit, Michigan, Steve Marks, Scott Marks of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Kim Green of Detroit, Michigan; grandchildren Zayleigh Renee Marks, Lena Perri Marks, Novah Joylynn-Marks, Violeta Sharoman, and David Rodriguez, as well as four nephews.
The Marks Family will be saying goodbye to their beloved father on June 21, 2023 at Chapel Hill Funeral Home.
