John Melvin Giger, 78 year old resident of Choctaw, Oklahoma, passed away September 18, 2018 at his home in Choctaw, Oklahoma. Born September 21, 1939 in Englewood, New Jersey, he was the son of Hans Giger and Margaret O. (Krause) Giger. John was a Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Air Force working as a civil engineer until his retirement, then he taught math at Rose State College for over 20 years. Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife of 57 years, Darlene Giger, daughter, Marianne Giger, and three brothers, Bruce, Bob, and Art Giger. He loved mowing, volunteering with Rebuilding Together to repair homes, volunteering with the “Ramp Crew” to build many wheelchair access ramps, singing in a choir (He sang in three of Billy Graham’s choirs), traveling the world and had lived in New Mexico, Alaska, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Australia, and Oklahoma, playing the trombone, and was a sports fan, especially the New York Giants and the Indy 500. Survivors include his children; Michael and his wife Lucy Giger, Nancy Bishop and her husband Brian; grandchildren, Deborah Ellison and her husband Eli, David Giger, Daniel Giger, Jared Bishop, Jacob Bishop, and Ally Bishop; siblings, Paul Adler and Peggy Fennell; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other family members. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 22, 2018 at Chapel Hill United Methodist Church, 2717 W. Hefner Road, OKC, OK 73120 with Reverend Marilynn Schellhamer officiating. A reception will be held prior to the service at 1:00 p.m. in The Great Hall at the church. Burial will follow Military Honors rendered by the U. S. Air Force Honors Detail at Arlington Memory Gardens, Midwest City, Oklahoma.
