Byron Paul Glenn went home to heaven on March 23, 2018. He was born August 12, 1956, in Little Rock, Arkansas to Robert Gordon Glenn, Sr., and Bettie Jo Camp Glenn. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Scharlee Glenn, son, Seth Glenn (wife, J.J.), and daughter Emily Honea (husband, Jeremy). Grandchildren include Grayson Glenn, Deacon Glenn, Owen Honea, and Lincoln Honea. He is also survived by his sister, Rebecca Rogers (husband, Steve) and brother, Robert Glenn, Jr. (wife Mary). His parents preceded him in death.
Byron graduated from Tulsa Nathan Hale High School in 1974, Oklahoma Baptist University in 1978, and Golden Gate Theological Seminary in 1982. He married Scharlee, his “Second Love” after Jesus Christ, on September 8, 1978.
Byron yielded his life to Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord at the age of nine. As a teenager, Byron dealt with anger and went to his parents for help. In response to his request, they showed him what the Bible says regarding anger and Byron fell in love with God’s Word.
2 Timothy 2:15 “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.”
2 Timothy 3:16-17 “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
2 Timothy 4:2 “Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction.”
Byron spent hours studying the Bible, checking the Greek, Hebrew, and context to ensure that he was correctly handling the Word of Truth. He loved to teach God’s word.
Byron also loved people. In 1982, Byron finished seminary and proceeded to follow God’s calling into church ministry. In 1994 God led him to his perfect fit in ministry, chaplaincy. Byron spent eight years as a hospice chaplain and sixteen years as a chaplain for Mercy Hospital. Sharing the love of Jesus Christ with the staff, patients, and their families was Byron’s passion. It broke his heart to have to take medical retirement in October 2017. During the months of Byron’s treatments and decline, he continued to write prayers and devotions for the Internal Physical Medicine Department of Mercy. It gave him a sense of continuing purpose.
Byron supported his children in their many endeavors. His biggest concern was for them to know Christ and His word so that they could discern right from wrong, honorable from dishonorable, and the wisdom to make good choices.
While Byron was serious about his faith, his love of Scripture, and his care for others he also had many other interests. One hobby was singing and playing guitar, which he loved to do often for friends and family. Around the holidays, Byron shared his gift of music with the patients and staff wherever he worked and became known as the “Singing Chaplain”. Byron was very musically inclined. He also enjoyed making up silly songs with his grandboys since he loved to laugh and have fun.
Byron always had his camera for every family event and enjoyed catching fun moments on film. He was passionate about photography, especially taking his family’s portraits and capturing the beauty of God’s creation.
As seen through his journey on Facebook, Byron lived life with joy no matter his circumstances. His ability to do this was based on his personal relationship with Christ. His hope for each of you is that you would come to yield your life to Jesus and grow to love the Lord as he did. He considered it an honor to be a part of each of your lives. Thank you for loving him.
