Calling hours will be held on Thursday from 2-4 & 6-8pm at the Fox & Murray Funeral Home. Mr. Rafferty passed away on Monday (Oct 13, 2014) at Crouse Hospital in Syracuse surrounded by his loving family.
Surviving is his wife Mary; two sons James Rafferty & his companion Nicole Hires of Lisbon and Jason Rafferty & his wife Katie of Pierrepont; his mother Patricia Wells & her husband Harry of Ogdensburg; two brothers Patrick Rafferty & his wife Lori and Timothy Rafferty & his wife Ruth all of Ogdensburg; step-sisters Tammy Amo & her husband Mike of Lisbon and Kelly Nowell & her husband Steve of Ogdensburg; five grandchildren Patrick Sharrow, McKenna Rafferty, Annah Burdick, Brynn Rafferty and Luke Mattice along with many nieces, nephews & cousins.
His father William P. Rafferty Sr. predeceased him in 2009.
Bill was born on April 18, 1956 in Ogdensburg, the son of William Sr. & Patricia (Newton) Rafferty. He graduated from Ogdensburg Free Academy in 1974, and later married Mary Sellers on July 1, 1978 at Notre Dame Church. He began his career as a correctional officer at the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility in 1981 and was quickly promoted to Sergeant by 1985. He continued to climb rank throughout his career, and held the position of Warden until 2007 when he retired due to declining health.
He was a former member of the Flying “A” Hunting Club, an avid hunter and fisherman, and enjoyed his dogs, skiing, riding motor cycles with his boys, spending time with his family, grandchildren and friends. Bill also enjoyed flying airplanes and held a private pilot’s license.
