Elizabeth B. (“Betty”) Clements, age 89, of Morristown, NY, passed away peacefully Tuesday morning, September 3, 2024, at Claxton Hepburn Medical Center in Ogdensburg, NY, with her family by her side.
Born on January 9, 1935, in Binghamton, NY, to the late Richard F. and Audrey (Wilcox) Briggs, Betty graduated with a Degree in Nursing from the University of Rochester in 1956. After graduation, Betty went on to work for the Tompkins County Health Department as a public health nurse in Ithaca, NY.
It was in Rochester that Betty met her future husband, Mahlon T. Clements of Lisbon. They married in Binghamton in 1959 and moved to Morristown in 1960 following Mahlon’s graduation from Cornell Law School. Together they raised their three sons and spent many happy times boating on the St. Lawrence River. As her children grew older, Betty enjoyed volunteering at Well Child Clinics in St. Lawrence County and working as a substitute school nurse. She was also a longtime supporter of Planned Parenthood.
Betty was devoted to her family and also enjoyed reading, knitting, sewing and spending time at the Morristown Library. She had several close friends and neighbors, and in her later years, happily paid regular visits to her Amish friend, Lydia. Betty was teased by her family and friends for her frugality, which she bore with pride.
Betty is survived by her husband, Mahlon T. Clements, formerly of Morristown; her three sons, Thomas Clements (and wife Dina), Mahlon (Chris) Clements (and partner Katherine) and Douglas Logan Darrow Clements; her beloved siblings, Louise Greabell and Richard W. Briggs; her dear grandchildren, John Clements, Kathryn Clements (and husband Neil Rodrigues), granddaughter Xiao Yu Clements and grandson Xi Wang Clements; nieces Lynne Greabell and Noelle Fournier; nephews Jeff Greabell, Adam Briggs and Allen Briggs, and many special and caring friends from nursing school, her days in Ithaca and her life in Morristown.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Betty’s name to the Morristown Public Library, the National Alliance on Mental Illness and the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge in Burlington, Vermont. Condolences and fond memories may be shared at foxandmurrayfuneralhome.com.
A private, graveside service will be held at a later time at the convenience of her family. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Fox & Murray Funeral Home.
