Doreen A. Gates

With heavy hearts we are saddened to announce the passing of Doreen A. Gates, age 92 of Ogdensburg who passed away on Monday (November 18, 2024) at her home with her son by her side. As per her request there will be no funeral services at this time.

Surviving are her children Lester Gates of Ogdensburg and Valerie (Larry) Puccia of Fort Myers Beach, FL; two grandchildren Justin Gates of Albany and Kory Gates of Potsdam; two great-grandchildren Elijah McDonald and Nikayla Lemieux; two brothers Richard Weatherdon of Kingston, Ontario and Dennis Weatherdon of Barry’s Bay Ontario Canada; along with many nieces, nephews & cousins.

She was predeceased by five brothers Leonus (infant), Hillary, Roy, Lloyd, Robert Weatherdon, and four sisters Doris Sheffer, Isabelle Nash, Ruth Cappello and Iona Masson.

Doreen was born on March 14, 1932 in Buckingham, Quebec a daughter of Samuel & Edith (Biehler) Weatherdon. She attended schools in Canada and was later married to Cameron Gates on February 18, 1950. The marriage later ended in divorce but remained friends. He passed away on November 18 2021.

During her career she worked at Fenton’s Bakery and sold AVON in Ottawa, and relocated to the United States in 1962 and worked as a nanny for the Hannan family of Ogdensburg. Doreen will be best remembered for working in Loblaws, Great American and Walmart where she raised over $130,000 for Children’s Miracle Network as their store front greeter. She retired in 2019.

She enjoyed walking, playing bingo, going to the casino with friends, watching old classic movies, word search books, playing Sodoku, watching NASCAR races. She loved music, but most of all she enjoyed the company of her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be remembered as a devoted, loving, caring, humble gift for everyone to share.
