Virginia was born in New Braunfels, Texas in 1926 to the late Maria and Francisco Torres. She was married to her husband, Manuel for more than 50 years, until his passing in 1997.
As a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Odessa for more than 60 years, Virginia faithfully attended Saturday evening Mass each week. For many years, she volunteered as a poll watcher at her local voting location. She loved the outdoors and had a passion for flowers and enjoyed gardening. She made the absolute best roast, homemade tortillas, tamales, and capirotada. For many, many years, on a daily basis, the birds began chirping early in the morning on the utility wiring in her back yard waiting for her to scatter seed for them. Every spring, she filled her hummingbird feeder and eagerly awaited the little visitors. She faithfully sent birthday cards to her grandchildren and always included a couple of dollars. She also enjoyed conversations on the phone with her beloved sisters-in-law. Her favorite morning ritual was watching the morning news on television while enjoying her piping hot coffee with either a couple of cookies or a pumpkin empanada.
Virginia is survived by her children, Dolores (Roy) Mewbourne of Plano, Texas, Luis (Vickie) Hernandez of Iowa, LA, Robert Hernandez of San Angelo, Texas, Rita (Lorenza) Johnson of Richardson, Texas, Albert (Mary) Hernandez of Odessa, and Irene (George) Subia of Odessa. She is also survived by her cherished grandchildren, Richie Mewbourne, Tricia Mewbourne, Richard Hernandez, Jimmy Hernandez, Melissa Williams, Agneta Hernandez, Sandy Tave, Selena Hernandez, Carlos Hernandez, Dianthe Hall, Stacie White, John White, Johnny Orona, Eugene Hernandez, Jeramy Hernandez, Jacob Hernandez, Steven Crenshaw, Damon Crenshaw, Jr., Anthony Crenshaw, Tesa Subia, and Sarita Subia. She is also survived by many great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren as well as many nieces, nephews, and other beloved family, neighbors, and friends.
Her son, Ernest Hernandez, and daughter, Mary Helen Crenshaw, also preceded her in death. In addition to her beloved parents, she is preceded in death by her siblings: sisters Pauline Guerrero, Alice Hurley, and Julia Wilkerson, along with her brother, Ramon Torres.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Visiting Angels and Interim Home Health Care and Hospice, especially, Helen, her nurse, and Socorro, her caregiver.
