Mary Mata 66 of Odessa went home to the Lord on April 12, 2012 surrounded by family at home. She was born April 23, 1945 to Dolores Jose and Virginia Aguilar in Grandfalls, TX. She lived in Big Spring before moving to Odessa. She was known for her great cooking and hospitality. She will be remembered for her potato salad, chili, and stuffing. She loved watermelon and honeydew whether it was good or not.
She cared for everyone she met and always opened her door to anyone in need. She was a beloved mother, wife, daughter, friend and grandmother. She never met anyone that didn’t become her friend. She made many friends during her 13 years at JoJo’s. Mom’s greatest love was her family she always said her family was her home interior. Her pride and joy was her grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Pedro, sister, Jessica Aguilar, one grandson, Joe Ray Mata.
She is survived by her husband Ray Q. Mata Jr., her son, Ray A. Mata III and wife Amanda, daughter, Margarita Artiaga husband Rey all of Odessa, brother, Joe Aguilar and wife Sarah, sister, Minnie Cano, brothers, Ramon Aguilar and wife Sandra, Sam Galindo and wife Linda, grandchildren, Daniel Ray, Ashley Maria, Anysa Haylee, Ethan Joshua, Savannah and Dakota.
She will lie in state at 618 W. 34th until Saturday morning. Funeral service will be at St. Mary’s Catholic Church at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, April 14, 2012. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
