Durward Herschel (D. H.) Russell went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at the age of 95 on Thursday, November 5, 2015. He was born April 19, 1920, in Bowie County, Texas, to William Anderson Russell and Mary Hooper Russell. He married the love of his life, Jewell Proctor, on September 22, 1937, in De Kalb, Texas. D. H. and Jewell were married 70 years, 6 months and 7 days, at the time of her passing on March 29, 2008.
D. H. and Jewell moved to Odessa with their two young sons, D. Mack and Johnny, in March 1948. D. H. went to work in the oil fields as a roughneck for his first ten years in the Permian Basin. He then worked approximately twenty years for Bob’s Casing Crews. He followed that with his dream job, working as a salesman for nine years at Eckel Manufacturing and Power Tongs. He retired in 1986 to care for his wife.
D. H. and Jewell were members of the Grandview Church of God in Odessa. They were loving parents and grandparents and were a great inspiration to family, friends and church family.
D. H. was preceded in death by his wife, Jewell, his son, Mack, his parents, Bill and Mary, and all of his brothers and sisters, Jess, Lee, Clara, Eula, and Ella.
D. H. is survived by his son, Johnny, and daughter-in-law, Sharon Russell, of Odessa, daughter-in-law, Reta Russell, of Odessa, three grandsons and their wives, Wayne and Rebecca Russell and Jeff and Amy Russell of Odessa and Scott and Starla Russell of Midland, one granddaughter and her husband, Cindy and Danny Thomason of Midland, and five great-grandchildren, Chad Russell, Grayson Thomason, Herschel Russell, Connor Russell and Haley Russell. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at Frank Wilson Funeral Home, 4635 Oakwood Drive, Odessa, Texas, on Sunday, November 8, 2015, between the hours of 2:00 and 4:00 p.m.
Services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, November 9, 2015, at Grandview Church of God, 2109 N. Grandview Avenue, Odessa, Texas, with Rev. Vernon Groce and Rev. Robert Fletcher presiding. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
