Robert H. Doering, born to Herman and Ethel Doering on April 9, 1928, in St. Louis, Missouri, passed away on February 1, 2010, in Oceanside, California. Bob is survived by his wife Ann, their son Jonathan, daughter-in-law Dawn and two grand-daughters.
Bob was a life-long Lutheran of strong faith, committed to Christian service. As an educator he both taught and coached at Lutheran High School, St. Louis; Lutheran High School, Los Angeles; the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and served as athletic director and chairman of the Physical Education Department at California Lutheran University, Thousand Oaks. He was a member of several Lutheran school boards and served on various church councils. Bob was an active member of Gideons International for forty years.
Traveling, gardening, and activities involving baseball gave Bob pleasure in his spare time. Whatever the activity, Bob would greet each day with enthusiasm and optimism and with a smile for anyone he encountered. Bob is remembered by all who knew him as a caring, thoughtful man. He earned his BS degree from Valparaiso University, Indiana, his MS from Washington University, St. Louis, and his PhD from the University of Southern California.
Other survivors include his brother, Walter (Melba) Doering of Georgetown, Texas; his sister Violet (Dan) Steinmeyer of St. Louis; and sisters-in-law Mary Doering of St. Louis and Donna Burkhart of St. Charles, Missouri. Bob is predeceased by his brother Herman and his brother-in-law Edward Burkhart. He also leaves ten nieces and nephews and their families.
Viewing will be on Thursday, February 9th, from 5 PM to 8 PM at Eternal Hills Mortuary, 1999 El Camino Real, Oceanside. The funeral service will be Friday, February 10th at 10 AM at the Redeemer by the Sea Lutheran Church, 6600 Black Rail Road, Carlsbad 92011. Interment will follow at Eternal Hills Memorial Park in Oceanside.
