Michiyo was born in a small town facing the Sea of Japan in northern Kyoto. She graduated as a nurse and worked in Horikawa Hospital where she met her husband, Yas (Muneyasu) Urano. They married in March,1963 and had two sons, Shinichi and Jun. She had been a housewife since then. She was socially active and once served as a president of PTA in a kinder garden.
She and her family immigrated to Boston, MA in 1977, where her husband pursued his career. Overcoming language and cultural barriers, Michiyo managed her home in their new country with grace, which allowed Yas and their sons to thrive in their academic and professional endeavors. She and her husband were active in their son’s school PTA and in the Japanese Association of Greater Boston.
She had enjoyed several hobbies. Some became semi-professional, including knighting, ikebana, quilting and Chinese painting. She started playing golf in her late 40’s and soon became a wonderful golfer. She surprised her friends by winning many tournaments, including “ace of the year” in our community (Ocean Hill Country Club) and having longest drives despite her small stature. She was blessed with two granddaughters, Erika and Haruka, and a step-granddaughter, Dominik.
Michiyo had a long history of kidney disease. She suffered from acute glomerulonephritis in her early 20’s. After an initial acute phase, it had been dormant until 70’s. Hemodialysis was initiated in March 2009, but 11 months later she was selected to receive a kidney transplant. Her new kidney served her until mid 2018. Peritoneal dialysis began thereafter, but in late 2019 red blood cell production became poor, leading to anemia, general weakness and uremia. She passed away peacefully in her home the at age 82.
