Mary Kathleen Lindley

Mary Kathleen (Bohan) Lindley, 80, of San Marcos, CA, passed away peacefully at 10:12am, Sunday, December 18th, with her daughter, Anne, at her side in San Marcos, CA. She was born on March 22nd, 1942, in Galesburg, IL, daughter of Dr. John E. Bohan, Sr., and Mina Rae (Morford) Bohan.

Mary grew up in Alexis, IL, and after graduating high school, briefly attended the University of Oklahoma before moving to Chicago, where she graduated from executive assistant school. In Chicago, she met and married William (Bill) Lacey Lindley, of Birmingham, AL on October 23rd, 1965. Moving around the country for Bill’s work, they had three children, Scott (born in Houston), Martin (born in San Diego), and Anne (born in Virginia Beach), before divorcing in 1979. Mary moved with her children back to Alexis to be closer to family and friends. She began working at Hill Correctional Center in Galesburg, IL, in 1986 and remained there until her retirement in 2006. In 2011, Mary moved to Seattle to be near her grandchildren, and a few years later moved to San Diego, again to be near her grandchildren, and to experience the joys of seeing the sun again!

Mary was a determined and hardworking single mom who ensured her children had a happy upbringing. With the love and support of her mother, sisters, brother, and the Alexis community she raised her children to be independent and successful in their own careers and families. After retiring, she traveled to Ireland (lifelong dream) with her daughter and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. A devout Catholic, Mary was a faithful member of St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in Alexis until she moved away, and she remained a devoted servant for the rest of her life. Mary was also a member of the Alexis P.E.O. Chapter G.

Mary is survived by two of her four siblings, Francis (William) Tracewell of Dallas, TX, and Elizabeth (James) Romero, of Norman, OK; her three children, Scott E. (Kim) Lindley of Sammamish, WA, Martin P. (Emily) Lindley, of Del Mar, CA, and Anne L. (Chris) Kumlin, of Vista, CA; her six grandchildren, Elizabeth G. Lindley and Jacob E. Lindley of Sammamish, WA, Taylor E. Lindley and Caitlin R. Lindley of Del Mar, CA, and Bohan K. Kumlin and Brynn L. Kumlin, of Vista, CA, and a multitude of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, and by siblings Barbara A. Bohan of Alexis, IL, and John E. (Linda) Bohan, Jr., of Springfield, IL.

Cremation will be accorded. Memorial services for Mary will be held in Alexis, IL, on April 14th-15th , 2023, with details to follow. The family asks that you please make any memorials to your favorite charity in Mary’s name.
