Carlsbad — Joseph La Mattino Jr., a long-time resident of Carlsbad, passed away on September 5th, 2021, surrounded by his loving family. Born January 11th, 1929, in Waterbury, CT, he was the son of Joseph La Mattino Sr. and Catherine (Ciresi) La Mattino. Joseph leaves behind his three daughters Donna, Laura, and Linda and four grandchildren: Andrew, Rebecca, Brooklyn, and Lucy.
He is proceeded in death by his loving son Mark Thomas La Mattino who passed in 1982, his loving wife Eleanor (Hryniewicki) La Mattino who passed in 2017, and his brother Thomas La Mattino who passed when Joe was in his late teens.
Joseph was a devoted, loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother. Formally educated as a pharmacist in Brooklyn, NY, he moved his young family to Costa Mesa, CA in 1960, eventually settling in Vista, CA in 1966. Continuing his profession, Joseph opened Vista Rexall Pharmacy in 1966, eventually selling the business and continuing to practice until his retirement at 80 years old, a 43 year service to the community. Joseph was very congenial, selfless, and giving of his knowledge and humor to his customers. Joseph always put the needs of the customers first and is praised even now by those who knew him as a caring and thoughtful pharmacist, friend, and mentor.
Joseph made a deep and lasting contribution to his community, church, friends, and those who knew him. He was a founding member of The Sunrise Kiwanis Club in Vista, CA. Joseph was a man of deep Catholic faith, volunteering to teach Catechism at Saint Francis Church in Vista, CA. Eventually moving to Saint John the Evangelist in Encinitas, CA Joseph never missed a service and developed many close and endearing friendships.
Joseph loved his wife Eleanor beyond measure, having been married for almost 60 years before her passing. They loved to travel together, spending time in Hawaii and Europe, as well as many states. He loved spending Sundays after service sailing on his boat with his beautiful wife and their four children. But his most cherished time spent was in enjoying the wonderful love and happiness of his beautiful family and loving friends.
Services will be held at Saint John the Evangelist Church in Encinitas on Saturday, October 2nd, 2021. There will be a Rosary held at 10:15 am, followed at 11am by the Funeral Mass which will also be viewed via Livestream for those who cannot attend. Interment service to follow at Eternal Hills Memorial Park in Oceanside, CA.
In lieu of flowers, it is requested donations be made to the American Cancer Society in remembrance of his beautiful wife Eleanor who passed from Pancreatic Cancer in 2017. Donations can also be made to Saint John the Evangelist church.
