Gloria Angelica Cortez passed away peacefully on Memorial Day, May 31, 2021, surrounded by her closest loved ones. Gloria was born in El Paso, Texas, and lived there for 70 years. She was a proud graduate of Bowie High School, class of 1956, and she remained close with her fellow Bowie Bears throughout her life.
In 1961, Gloria married her high school friend, Guillermo Cortez, after his return from his Air Force overseas tour. Together, the couple had one son, William, who Gloria lovingly called “Billito.” For decades, Gloria was a working professional. She made a career for herself in international paper sales, a rare feat for a woman at the time, and ultimately retired from International Paper Company. Although Gloria had a distinguished career, she was most proud of her public service accomplishments.
Following her retirement, Gloria became an active volunteer for the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary (DAVA), and she was voted in and installed as the Commander of her El Paso Chapter. In 2007, Gloria continued her public works when she and her husband moved to Oceanside, California to be closer to the couple’s son and two granddaughters. Gloria held multiple posts and continued to be very active in several local organizations. She devoted thousands of hours serving Veterans in a variety of capacities: serving refreshments at the VA hospital; organizing events & parades; mailing Christmas cards; and making keepsakes for local Veterans.
Her career and committee highlights include: President, International Association of Printing House Craftsman, Inc.; Commander, El Paso DAV Auxiliary; Vice President, National Association of Retired Federal Employees; El Paso Women’s Business Association Board Member; Oceanside American GI Forum – Fund Raising Committee; American Legion Auxiliary member.
She was a leader and matriarch, both in her community and in her family. Gloria spent hours each day checking in with her sisters, cousins, and friends. During the holidays, she wrote dozens of cards and sent them to people all over the country. Gloria prayed fiercely for her loved ones, friends, and even people she never met. Ever the prayer warrior, she spent hours each day praying for the health, well-being and happiness of all. She loved to celebrate life every day and always looked forward to the next family gathering. Gloria was happiest when she was with her family, surrounded by good food and music. Her family was the biggest joy of her life. Gloria touched so many people with her optimism, faith, humor, resilience and encouragement. She is sincerely missed.
Gloria is survived by her husband Guillermo, her son Bill and his wife Kami, granddaughters Cortney & Valerie, great-grandson Benjamin, siblings Hilda, Monica and Raymond along with numerous relatives in El Paso, Tx and California.
Rosary, high mass and reception will be held in her honor on July 31st, 2021 at San Luis Pastor Chapel, in Oceanside, CA starting at 10am PST.
