Charles Robinson was born in Hollywood, CA April 26, 1928 the son of Jennie Bird Loveless and William Rainton Calvert Robinson. He passed into God’s gentle embrace, May 9, 2021, days after his 93rd birthday & 50th wedding anniversary.
As a boy living in Coronado he delivered newspapers for the San Diego Union Tribune. Some of his customers were actors, Humphrey Bogart & Lauren Bacall as well as the fist lady Eleanor Roosevelt. Later “chuck” worked for the Coronado Parks Department trimming trees & mowing the lawns of all the parks that are still there today. Chuck also worked in the city shop maintaining Coronado’s parks department vehicles, the city’s fire engines & police cars. He test drove many of the vehicles he worked on & frequently wondered what the police would think if they saw a young kid driving one of their cars around town!
Chuck was drafted during the Korean Conflict in 1950. Because of his mechanical expertise, he worked on everything from tanks to jeeps. Chuck served in Germany and was discharged in 1952.
Returning to the states he continued his education at Chico State University where he became student body president & met his first wife Joan Eleanor Larkey. 1957 he graduated with a Lifetime Credential for teaching.
Chuck returned to the San Diego area & taught for the majority of his career at Solana Beach Elementary where he was honored with the prestigious “teacher of the year” award for excellence in education.
He soon started a family & had two boys. Being a loving father he involved himself in Indian guides & coaching little league where he led his baseball team to the local league championship. His success at baseball was not met with the same success on the home front & he found himself single.
Chuck always enjoyed dancing & took up square dancing in Vista where he met LaJoyce Hamond. She had two girls from a previous marriage & they danced their way into each other’s hearts. They were married April 30, 1971.
When Chuck retired from teaching he shared his love of history, nature & travel with members of his family. Chuck traveled extensively throughout the U.S., France, Germany, China, Hong Kong, Macau, England, Ireland, Scotland, Whales, and Australia.
His legacy of love for family & friends lives on in those of us that remain!
Remaining family is his loving wife LaJoyce; two sons Charlie & William; two daughters Loretta & Linda; a granddaughter Brittney & 2 great grandchildren.
