Lieberman, M.D., 86, of Hampton Falls, New Hampshire, formerly of Deal, New Jersey, died on Tuesday, January 31. His wife, Sue Ann Lieberman, predeceased him in 2010 after 45 years of marriage. Edward is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Jim and Beth Lieberman, his daughter Meg Lieberman, and granddaughters Helen and Anna Lieberman. Born to the late Harold and Germaine Lieberman, he spent his childhood in Center City Philadelphia, where he lived with his extended family while his father served in World War II.After the war, the family moved to Glenolden, Penn., and Claymont, Delaware. Edward lettered in basketball and track and field at Claymont High School, holding a school javelin record and graduating as valedictorian in 1954. He attended Washington College (Md.) before transferring to Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Penn. At F&M he ran track and field, earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy, and graduated Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa in1958. Edward’s intellect led him to University of Pennsylvania Medical School, graduating in1962. He rarely missed a reunion with his esteemed medical classmates. Commissioned as a naval officer during medical school, Edward completed his internship at United State Naval Hospital (Chelsea, Mass.). Lieutenant Lieberman was personally selected by Admiral Hyman Rickover to join the new Polaris nuclear submarine program as a medical officer on the U.S.S. Lewis and Clark (SSBN-644), based out of Norfolk, Va. He then completed a radiology residency at Albert Einstein Hospital, where he earned certification in diagnostic radiology and radiation oncology. Dr. Lieberman practiced radiology with Jersey Shore Radiology Associates from 1970 to 2000. He served as the corporation’s long-time treasurer, managing pension investments for 20 years. Edward helped Central Jersey Radiologists open the first independent MRI facility in Monmouth County. He was a long-time member of Temple Beth Miriam, Elberon Bathing Club, Hollywood Golf Club, and the Boro Club of Deal, where he was president in 1979. Edward married Sue Ann Katz in 1964, after they met through mutual friends in Freehold, N.J. Together they raised their children Jim and Meg in Deal, celebrating holidays with family and sunny beach days on the Jersey Shore. In retirement, Edward and Sue traveled to visit their granddaughters and found peace in Hawaii’s beauty and music. Edward cheered his Philadelphia sports teams with devotion, especially the Penn Quakers, 76ers, Phillies, and, unfailingly, the Eagles. After moving to New Hampshire in 2013 to be closer to his family, Edward loved watching his granddaughters’ concerts and sports and attending cultural and religious events at Phillips Exeter Academy. He took great pride in his children and grandchildren, his role as a radiologist, and his Naval service. The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff of Webster at Rye for their devoted care. The funeral service will take place at 1:00 pm on Sunday, February 5, at Temple Beth Miriam, Elberon, New Jersey.
