Susie Mae Nelson was born on January 17, 1936 in Foote, Mississippi. She was the only child of Lillie Billups. Susie confessed hope and belief in Jesus Christ at an early age. She was a loving and compassionate teenager whose early years were spent surrounded by her cousins in her home in Memphis Tennessee.
At an early age Susie met and married her husband Cozzie Nelson on February 12, 1954. The couple moved from Memphis, Tennessee to Chicago, Illinois and started their family. Within their 32 years of marriage the couple had five children, Vera, Larry, Jerry (Rochelle), Maurice, and Vicki. Larry and Maurice both preceded her in death. The couple divorced in June 1993, Cozzie preceded her in death in September 1999.
Susie worked and retired from Sweetheart Cup Corporation in June 2002. Susie’s hobbies were gardening, watching sports and word-finds. Susie was a faithful member of True Vine of Holiness Church. She served in the choir, enjoyed attending Sunday school and volunteering in the food pantry. She was always willing to serve in any capacity she could. Susie was always in good spirits and was somewhat humorous. It was almost impossible to be in her company and not share a smile or laugh aloud; for the makeup of her nature included a beautiful smile, a gentle touch, a loving heart and most of all, the love of Christ. Susie’s dedication to her church, and her love for the Lord was with her until the end.
Susie was called home peacefully on Friday, December 16, 2022. Susie will lovingly be remembered for being an exceptional mother, loving grandmother, great grandmother and great-great grandmother, aunt, cousin and faithful friend. Her fun loving personality and genuine kindness was given to all that encountered or knew her.
Susie leaves behind her three children, seven grandchildren Gwendolyn (Carlos), Natalie, LaTreece (Rob), Allen, Emerald, Wardell (Hiep) and Faythe, great grandmother of 17 and great-great grandmother of eight, sister-cousin Everlean and a host of cousins, loved ones and dear friends.
