Mark E. Nielsen, a courageous Vietnam War veteran and devoted family man, passed away peacefully on September 6, 2024 at the age of 74. Mark was the beloved husband of fifty years to Mary Ann (nee Dal Santo) and loving father to Shannon (Chris) Garbie, Mark (late Rachel),Rebecca Tyrrell, Jessica (Michael) Schlamp, and Anthony (Karen). Proud Papa of Nicholas and Joseph Garbie, Collin Hir, Chase and Ella Nielsen, Connor, Quinn and Olivia Tyrrell, Lillian and Charlotte Schlamp, and Peter Nielsen.
Mark was the cherished son of the late Kermett and Winifred (nee Kelner) Nielsen. Fond brother of Anne (William) Freund, Linnea (Robert) Walavich, James Eric, the late John Peter (Rae), Nancy (late Joseph) Murphy, Frances (Richard) Kelleher, Patricia (Patrick) O’Donnell, Christopher (Mary Kay), and the late Matthew. The fond uncle of many nieces, nephews, and a dear friend to many.
Mark was a 1964 graduate of Saint Margaret of Scotland and a 1968 graduate of Leo High School. After high school, Mark enlisted in the United States Army and proudly served his country during the Vietnam War. After his Honorable Discharge in June of 1970, he came back to the states and soon after met his beautiful wife Mary Ann. They settled into Evergreen Park where they proudly raised their five children. In his younger years he was an avid softball player, eventually being inducted into the Softball Hall of Fame. As he grew older, he developed a love of golf. He was a long time member of the Most Holy Redeemer golf league and proud member of the American Legion Post #854.
Family and friends will gather for a visitation for Mark on Thursday, September 12, 2024 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Blake-Lamb Funeral Home. Funeral Friday, September 13, 2024 at 9:00 a.m. from Blake-Lamb Funeral Home to Most Holy Redeemer Church. Mass at 10:00 a.m. Internment private.
