Friends and family will remember him as being a fun-loving, good-natured person who loved to sing, play tennis, travel, and act in plays. Peter shined in the limelight and took great joy in entertaining others.
Pete was born in East Orange, New Jersey to Elizabeth Kip Nichols and Arnold H. Nichols on June 9, 1929. Graduating from Amherst College in Massachusetts, Pete then joined the Army.
He was a medic stationed in Fort Benning, Georgia. He married Edda Heikhaus of Gelsenkirchen, Germany in 1955, having three daughters. Pete worked in banking, first in New York City and then in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Tokyo, Japan. In 1970 he married Nancy Oliver Nichols in Sacramento, having two sons.
Pete is survived by his wife Nancy Nichols of San Francisco, daughters Julia Nichols Andres of Novato, Karen Mercury (Dan) of Vallejo, Claudia Heikhaus-Morfit (Fred) of San Anselmo, Jonathan Nichols (Carla) of San Francisco, and Matthew Nichols of New York City. Olivia Morfit and Mari Johnson-Andres are his two granddaughters. Babette Cameron of Stonington, Maine is his surviving sister.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 16, 2014 at 2 p.m. at Novato Presbyterian Church located at 710 Wilson Avenue in Novato.
