She was my 'aunt' Betty, a friend of my parents. She and 'uncle' Walt would take my sister and I to their cabin when we were almost tweens. Once I realized they weren't aunt & uncle by blood I thought it doesn't matter -- I like them better than my real aunt & uncles anyway.  And always a good time with them both. I remember really enjoying  their slides of their trip to the Grand Canyon and just knew I had to do it myself one day. I did! Rest well, Aunt Betty. You were always so kind to me.

Dear Aunt Betty,
 I have many fond memories of you! When you left the convent you stayed at my parents house. I jokingly called you my rich aunt because you went shopping with your sister and came back with a whole collection of clothes and then a new car. These were things you needed to start a whole new life. Over the years you joined us for parties and summer crab feasts on the lot at Woodstock Ave.
When I married and moved to Colorado Springs, You came to visit us with this new guy, Walt. It was a joy to meet him and see how happy you two were together. On one of our trips home, Dad brought us up to your cabin. Walt took us tubing on the river. We had fun gathering rocks with you to form a pool to soak in. The cabin was such a restful place. I know Dad loved working on it and relaxing there.
When our daughter Erica was performing in Cirque du Soleil in Las Vegas, you and Walt came out to Treasure Island to see her in Mystere. What a thrill it was for us to share that show with you. It was fun going backstage to see the cast, costumes, makeup and rigging. Years later you both came back to see her in Ka at the MGM Grand. This time Erica was able arrange a rare visit for Uncle Walt to sit in with the Ka musicians during a show. He said it was the experience of a lifetime. While he was at the show, I fondly remember having a quiet time for just the two of us walking, talking and getting ice cream. 
After we moved to Hawaii to live with our daughter Maria’s family, trips to Baltimore were rare but it always was a priority to visit with you. Your home was beautiful with the family pictures on the wall and your lovely garden with all the birds. 
We were lucky enough to get to 2 of the family crab feasts you and Walt have hosted. A great way to connect with the relatives.
I was right when I called you my rich aunt. You are rich in love that you have shared with the family & especially Uncle Walt! Thank You for being such a special part of my life!

Dear Aunt Betty,
My memories of you include so many holidays and major life events - Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter.   You were always part of those times when I was growing up.  From my first communion, to your first lipstick after leaving the convent, to the sleepovers in Greenbelt when I was a pre-teen.  And we were elated for you when you found Walt.  

I spent many weekends together with you and Walt at the Capon Cabin, sometimes with my friends from the UMBC Outdoor Club.  Canoe and inner tube trips down that river were a highlight.  I loved listening to Walt play the piano while we cooked, and sitting by the wood stove afterwards.  

When I lived in D.C. in 1986 we had many dinners and continued adventures at the cabin.  And then I moved off to other places, but you and Walt came to visit me. You came in the summer to Glacier National Park, MT and stayed with me in my A-frame cabin (with the skinny little A-frame outhouse) and later came for Thanksgiving in Ames, Iowa (when it was bitterly cold).  You came to help and stayed with us in Iowa when Hayden was born.  James and I brought Zoe and Hayden back to Baltimore via Amtrak and invaded your house for days at a time, with Legos, musical instruments, etc. but we were always welcome.  I would sneak into the kitchen to do a few dishes and you would “scold” me with “Get out of MY kitchen” admonishments, although I knew that you appreciated the help.  I always hoped that my kids would be on their best behavior because we knew that you had strict expectations as a previous first grade teacher.  

You stayed close to mom and had a soft spot in your heart for my dad. I got back to Baltimore for some of the crab feasts, which were such a generous gift.  Your heart and soul were focused on your family and we all knew it.  Thanks for being there and supporting me in my pursuits for all those years.  So many fond memories.  I am lucky to have had you in my life.   And I promise to stay close to Walt.

My memories of Aunt Bet are always of fun and great times. When I was young she lived down the road from us and I would spend the night at her house. She knew I loved doing arts and crafts. One year we even made a silk screening machine out of a old screen and painted Christmas cards! Also her and Uncle Walt adopted me as their God daughter, since my original God parents moved away and I never saw them again. They took this responsibility very serious and always made me feel special. She will be missed. Love you. Fly free with the Angels Aunt Bet
