It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Oswald C. Myers, “Ossie” who passed away peacefully with his family by his side on November 29, 2024, at the age of 93. Born on November 5, 1931, in Utica, New York, Ossie lived a life full of adventure, service, and unwavering dedication to his family and friends.
Ossie grew up in Norwich and graduated from Norwich High School in 1951, where he excelled in sports. He enjoyed fishing on the Chenango River, and hunting with his family. Following high school, he answered the call to serve his country, enlisting in the United States Air Force from 1952 to 1956. During his service, he served as a Military Police officer, acted as security detail for the base commander, and earned top-secret security clearance—distinctions that reflected his integrity and strong sense of duty.
After his military service, Oswald returned to Norwich, married Arietta Von Hassel on October 26, 1957 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Norwich. Together they raised five children on their farm in Otselic.
Oswald worked at several local businesses including Norwich Shoe Factory, Norwich Pharmaceutical, Norwich Knitting Mills, Plant Manager for Champion Products, retiring as an executive with Barclay Sportswear.
Oswald was well-known for his love of wildlife and the great outdoors. Whether hunting, fishing, or trapping, he found peace and joy in nature. His expert marksmanship and adventurous spirit were admired by many. He also had a zest for life, enjoying bonfires, dancing, and sharing laughter with his loved ones. His travels to Alaska, Canada and Montana were among the many adventures that enriched his life.
Oswald’s character was defined by his strength, loyalty, and protective nature toward his family.
He was a proud member of the American Legion Post 973, reflecting his continued commitment to serving his community and fellow veterans.
Oswald was predeceased by his wife of 67 years, Arietta; his brothers, Charles Myers, and John Myers; and his sister, Isabell Call.
Left behind to cherish his memory are his children, John (Karlee) Myers, Oswald (April) Myers, Anna (Douglas) Brown, Michele (Randy) Reakes, and Susan (Christopher) Lordon; his grandchildren, Oswald (Becky) Myers, Nicholas Myers, Elizabeth (Don) Hull, Benjamin Brown, Riley Lordon, Ashley Lordon, James Lordon, Jesi (Josh) Buell, and Michelle (Anthony) Corona; his great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Myers, Theodore Myers, Karlyn Buell, and Ezekiel Corona; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
A funeral service for Oswald will take place at 12:00pm on Friday, December 13, 2024 at R.J. Fahy Funeral Home, 116 N. Broad St. Norwich with Fr. Ralph Bove officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 9:00am until the time of service. After the service, his family and friends will gather to celebrate a life well lived at the American Legion Post 973, 167 Valley View Rd. South Otselic.
He will be laid to rest at Maple Grove Cemetery in the spring.
