Leroy Charles Burlingame, Sr. passed away on Tuesday, July 27, at his home. He was predeceased by his wife of over 70 years, Doris; his sons, Leroy Burlingame Jr., Gerald Burlingame; and his sister and brother in law, Joyce and Ralph Ward. Survivors include his son and daughter in law, Larry and Nancy Burlingame, his daughter and son in law, Candace Ostrom and James Bosworth; his grandchildren, Brenda Hatch, Leroy C. Burlingame III, Travis Burlingame, Jason Burlingame, and Amanda Ostrom; his brother and sister in law, Wayne and Helen Burlingame; several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Leroy was born in Norwich and grew up in the area. He served his country in the US Army during the Korean War. After his discharge, Leroy returned to Norwich and made his living as a building contractor, he also owned a newspaper distribution franchise for the Syracuse Herald American. Leroy was a talented woodworker and made many pieces of furniture. He also loved collecting antiques and camping with his family. He had several acres of land in Plymouth with a pond and a pavilion for camping and family activities. Leroy’s greatest joy was spending time with his family and he would always insist on everyone being home for holidays. Leroy was a fan of old comedy shows featuring Carol Burnett, Tim Conway and Johnny Carson and his own sense of humor will be remembered happily by his children and grandchildren.
A funeral service for Leroy will take place at 11:00 am on Monday, August 2nd, at R.J. Fahy Funeral Home, 116 N. Broad St., Norwich with Rev. Jeremy Stopford officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at North Norwich Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday from 10:00 am until the time of service.
